João Cancelo Signs Permanent Deal with Barcelona
João Cancelo is back in Barcelona. This time, he’s staying.
The Catalan club have confirmed the Portuguese full-back has signed a permanent deal until June 30, 2029, joining as a free agent after terminating his contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal.
“Agreement reached between João Cancelo and FC Barcelona for the Portuguese player to join. The fullback arrives as a free agent and signs a contract up to 30 June 2029,” the club announced.
It is Cancelo’s third arrival at Barça after two impressive loan spells. Those stints convinced the club; this one ties him to the project long term.
The 32-year-old didn’t hide what it took to make the move happen. He revealed he gave up part of his salary to walk away from Al-Hilal and force through the return he wanted.
“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased to be here, I’m where I want to be. I trained separately for a week. I told Deco that either I came here or I’d spend a year there without playing, still getting paid,” he said.
“I gave up part of my salary, but it was either sign for Barça or nothing. It’s a very special club, I’m here to help and I hope to win many titles. We’re building a great team.”
Under Hansi Flick, Cancelo is expected to open the season as first choice on the left side of defence, with Alejandro Balde pushing him for minutes and offering a younger alternative.
A familiar face, a new contract, and a clear statement: for João Cancelo and Barcelona, this is no longer a temporary fling.
