Hansi Flick's Insights After Barcelona's 5-0 Victory Over Basel

Hansi Flick walked away from Barcelona’s latest pre-season test satisfied, but not fooled.

A 5-0 win over Basel looks emphatic on paper. For the German on the touchline, it was another data point, not a finished picture.

Flick pleased – but pushing for more

After the game, speaking to the club’s media, Flick didn’t hide what he wants next.

Asked directly about strengthening the squad before the transfer window shuts, he was blunt: “I think we need a few more players.”

The message was clear. The performance against Basel was a step up from the uneven showing at the three-way tournament in Udine, yet Flick still sees a squad under construction rather than one ready to attack the new season.

He stressed that the coming days will be decisive in shaping Barcelona’s plans.

“We’ll analyse this match and also the training sessions. And we’ve got a match this week, so we’ll see.”

The result in Switzerland helped, the scoreline helped, but Flick kept dragging the conversation back to the training ground.

“The most important thing is how we train – the quality and the intensity – and that’s very good. I can see the standard of the team and that’s what matters most.”

For him, the real barometer is not a friendly, even one in which Barcelona score five, but the daily level behind closed doors.

Balancing minutes with Elche on the horizon

With the La Liga opener against Elche approaching, every selection call now carries extra weight.

Flick’s choices against Basel – who started, who sat, who came on late – were shaped by fitness more than tactics. Several players have only just rejoined the group, and that reality is driving his thinking.

“Some players arrived five days ago and we have to prepare for the match against Elche: we have to think about who can start, who can play the full ninety minutes, and we can only make five substitutions.

“All of this influences how we want to manage this match.”

Karim Adeyemi’s strong display in midfield offered one positive talking point, but even that was framed inside a wider puzzle: how to bring everyone up to speed without risking them before the real games begin.

A useful test, and a warning

Basel did not roll over. Flick acknowledged as much.

“It was a good test for us; Basel played well. It wasn’t easy playing against them.”

The scoreline could suggest a procession. The coach saw something more demanding, especially in the first half, where Barcelona’s rhythm lagged behind his expectations.

“Perhaps in the first half we didn’t play as quickly as we’d have liked, either in terms of positioning or off the ball.

“That’s what we need to improve on. We’ve got potential, and I’m pleased with the test.”

Five goals, a clean sheet, and a coach still asking for sharper movement, quicker passing, and a couple more signings.

Pre-season has given Flick a platform. Elche, and the closing days of the transfer window, will show whether Barcelona can turn that platform into something more serious.
