Why Folarin Balogun Received a Red Card in USMNT vs Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 World Cup
Folarin Balogun was shown a straight red card during the 64th minute of the United States men's national team (USMNT) match against Bosnia and Herzegovina at the 2026 World Cup Round of 32. The game took place at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, leaving the USMNT to finish the match with ten players under coach Mauricio Pochettino.
The Incident Leading to the Red Card
Just before halftime, Balogun had put the US ahead with a goal that gave the hosts a 1-0 lead. Later, his dismissal came from a challenge made from behind on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic. The referee judged the tackle as serious foul play. Although it did not seem intentional or excessively dangerous, the recklessness of the tackle warranted a direct red card instead of a yellow.
Impact on the USMNT
This sending off dealt a significant setback for the US side. Balogun has been central to the American offense throughout the tournament. Losing their top scorer meant Pochettino’s team had to hold onto a narrow one-goal advantage with only ten men for over 25 minutes.
Despite being a man down, the USMNT pressed forward relentlessly, seeking a second goal to ease the pressure. Their persistence paid off in the 82nd minute when Malik Tillman scored a magnificent free kick, securing a 2-0 victory and advancing the USA to the Round of 16.
Suspension and Next Match
The red card automatically brings a one-match suspension. This rules Balogun out of the next game if the US advances past Bosnia and Herzegovina. That next challenge is against Belgium on July 6 at Seattle Stadium, where the US will attempt to reach the quarterfinals, matching their best-ever World Cup finish.
