England Faces Livramento Injury Scare Before World Cup Opener

England’s World Cup plans have been jolted on the eve of their opener, with Tino Livramento poised to fly home before a ball has even been kicked.

Thomas Tuchel’s squad are bound for Texas after a final workout at their Kansas City base, gearing up for Wednesday’s Group L opener against Croatia. The mood had been light, the camp settled, the sessions open to the media and, crucially, with every player involved.

That picture has changed sharply.

Livramento, the Newcastle full-back whose energy and versatility had given England another dimension on the flanks, now looks likely to miss the entire tournament, not just Tuesday’s final training session. He withdrew from scheduled media duties on Sunday and subsequent reports have pointed to a calf injury serious enough to end his World Cup before it starts.

It is a brutal twist in timing. Tuchel had been working with a full deck since arriving in Missouri, shaping his plans with Livramento very much part of the equation. Now he faces a late reshuffle.

Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah is being lined up as a potential replacement. His inclusion would tilt the balance of England’s defensive options, offering another central defender who can operate in a back three or step into wider roles, but without the same natural attacking thrust from full-back that Livramento brings.

England do at least have a narrow window to act. Tournament regulations allow squads to replace injured players up to 24 hours before their first match. For Tuchel and his staff, that means a hard deadline of 3pm local time in Texas (9pm Irish time) to complete the necessary paperwork with FIFA.

The clock is ticking, the flight to Texas is waiting, and a manager who thought his biggest decisions revolved around team selection now has to decide who even makes it to the start line.
