Declan Rice Withdraws from England Duty Ahead of UEFA Nations League

Declan Rice has withdrawn from England duty, one of five players to pull out of Thomas Tuchel’s squad ahead of a demanding UEFA Nations League schedule.

Arsenal’s midfield leader joins Newcastle defender Tino Livramento, Chelsea playmaker Cole Palmer and Manchester United pair Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford on the absentee list. All five, according to English newspaper "The Sun", have stepped away from the Three Lions camp because of injury issues.

For Tuchel, it is a disruptive start to the break. For England, it rips out a chunk of their core.

Rice rested, but at a cost

Rice’s case is the most striking. The 25-year-old was central to England’s 2026 World Cup run, driving the team to a third-place finish — their best showing on the global stage since lifting the trophy in 1966.

He started every match at that tournament except the final group game against Panama, pushing his tally to 80 caps and underlining his status as one of the first names on the team sheet. That workload now bites. The report states his withdrawal is down to load management, a calculated move to protect one of England’s most trusted engines.

Without him, Tuchel loses his midfield anchor just as the Nations League campaign tightens.

Late call-ups and a busy schedule

The reshuffle has opened the door for James Garner and Morgan Gibbs-White, both drafted in as late call-ups. The pair are due to link up with the rest of the squad at St George’s Park on Tuesday, stepping into a camp that has suddenly changed shape.

They walk into a brutal run of fixtures.

England host Spain at Wembley on Saturday, a marquee night under the arch. Then comes a trip to Prague to face the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

That’s only the start. A journey to Rijeka follows on 3 October to meet Croatia, before England return to London for a second clash with the Czechs on 6 October, all in the Nations League.
