Darwin Núñez Reunion Talk Ends as Liverpool Focuses on New Targets
Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez reunion talk has hit a hard stop.
Despite a swirl of reports from Spain and Uruguay suggesting a dramatic return from Al-Hilal, those inside the English game are pouring cold water on the idea, with one source dismissing it as “pie in the sky”.
Rumours of a comeback
The story gathered pace earlier this month when Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo claimed Liverpool “are positioning themselves” to bring Núñez back as a “low-cost option”. The line was bold: the Uruguay international had supposedly reached an agreement in principle to terminate his contract in Saudi Arabia by mutual consent, freeing him to leave Al-Hilal for nothing.
Uruguayan journalist Juan Pablo Romero then went even stronger. Speaking on Carpe Deportiva, he declared Núñez’s Anfield return a “done” deal, insisting the move was agreed even if it would not be confirmed during the World Cup or in the immediate days after.
For a fanbase bracing itself for life after Mohamed Salah, it sounded like the kind of opportunistic deal Liverpool used to specialise in. A familiar face, a free transfer, a second chance.
Then came the pushback.
Liverpool looking elsewhere
Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke has moved to shut the door on the story, insisting Liverpool “are not currently in the race” to re-sign Núñez and are instead concentrating on other attacking options.
“I don’t think Liverpool, right now, have any plans to sign Nunez and bring him back to Anfield, having let him leave a year ago to make that move to Saudi Arabia,” O’Rourke said on the outlet’s podcast. “So yeah, I think it’s a bit of a pie in the sky that one, that Nunez could be going back to Anfield.”
The club’s attacking rebuild is already in motion. With Salah expected to depart this summer, Yan Diomande has emerged as Liverpool’s primary target to fill the Egyptian’s role. That comes on top of last year’s investment in Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike to bolster the forward line.
The plan, for now, is evolution rather than nostalgia.
Premier League interest remains – but not from Anfield
Núñez’s future is still a live topic. The 24-year-old is believed to retain admirers in the Premier League, with Newcastle among the clubs monitoring his situation. A move back to England remains possible.
Just not to Merseyside, as things stand.
“He is still believed to be attracting interest from the Premier League,” Football Insider reported, “but a shock return to Merseyside is not on the cards as it stands.”
That stance is backed up by another heavyweight of the transfer market.
Romano and the numbers behind Liverpool’s summer
Fabrizio Romano has also stepped in to cool the speculation. Writing on X, he stated that “there’s nothing ongoing” between Liverpool and Núñez regarding a potential return from Al-Hilal, adding that “sources close to the striker play down reports” of a comeback.
On his YouTube channel, Romano went further: “My information is that those close to Darwin and those close to Darwin’s camp deny this information. They say it’s not true, that there’s nothing ongoing with Nunez and Liverpool.”
The broader context is significant. According to O’Rourke, Liverpool are preparing for a major summer outlay, with sources telling Football Insider the club will spend over £250m to fuel a title challenge under their former Bournemouth manager.
With that kind of budget, Liverpool can reshape an attack in transition without revisiting a player they allowed to leave only a year ago.
The Núñez story will keep flickering while his future in Saudi Arabia remains unsettled. But for Liverpool, the message is blunt: the past is staying in the past, and the money is being lined up for a very different kind of forward line.
