Cristiano Ronaldo came far closer to wearing Chelsea blue than most realised during his stormy second spell at Manchester United.

In 2022, as frustration grew around Ronaldo’s role at Old Trafford and United’s slide down the Premier League table, Stamford Bridge briefly opened as a potential escape route. It was Todd Boehly’s first transfer window in charge, and the new Chelsea co-owner was looking for a statement.

Boehly, acting not only as owner but also as a short-term sporting director, sat down with Jorge Mendes. According to The Athletic, the American was intrigued by the idea of landing one of the game’s biggest global stars at a time when United had just finished sixth and Ronaldo was locked in a difficult, increasingly tense second stint at the club.

The proposal went beyond a casual conversation. Ronaldo’s name moved to the centre of Boehly’s early plans for reshaping Chelsea. A marquee signing, a global icon, a commercial juggernaut — all available, all interested, and all within reach.

On paper, it looked like the perfect coup.

But the football side of the club had its own ideas. The decisive voice belonged to Thomas Tuchel, the Champions League-winning manager who had just delivered European glory to Stamford Bridge a year earlier.

Tuchel shut it down.

The German coach, The Athletic reports, made his “firm opposition” to any deal for Ronaldo “very clear on several occasions”. He did not want to rebuild his team around a 37-year-old forward, no matter how luminous the name or how tempting the spotlight.

That stance killed the move. Boehly had already explored the possibility with Mendes, the path had been sketched out, yet Tuchel’s resistance blocked Ronaldo from making the jump from Old Trafford to West London.

Ronaldo’s second United adventure, spanning 2021 to 2023, ultimately collapsed in acrimony and ended far from the Premier League, at Al-Nassr. Chelsea moved in a different direction. And one of the most eye-catching what-ifs of recent years stayed exactly that — an idea, a meeting, a door that closed before Ronaldo ever walked through it.
