Christos Tzolis: Arsenal's New Left Winger Shines on Debut

Arsenal may yet dip into the market for another forward before the window shuts on September 1, but one prominent voice believes the answer to their left‑side question is already in the building.

Jamie Carragher has thrown his weight behind Christos Tzolis after the Greek winger lit up Arsenal’s 3-0 win over Coventry City, capping his Premier League debut with an assist for Bukayo Saka.

Carragher: “What a left winger Arsenal have got”

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, the former Liverpool defender was unequivocal in his assessment.

“Tzolis has been excellent on his Premier League debut. What a left winger Arsenal have got,” Carragher said, as the Emirates crowd drifted away still buzzing from the 22-year-old’s display.

Tzolis arrived from Club Brugge in a £34m deal this summer, a signing framed as part of Arsenal’s push to retain their Premier League crown and finally crack the latter stages of the Champions League. Many assumed he would simply step into the role vacated by Leandro Trossard, who left for Besiktas after playing his part in ending the club’s two-decade wait for a title.

Instead, Tzolis has barged the door down.

He impressed in pre-season, then underlined his intent in the Community Shield win over Manchester City, showing he had no interest in being a squad player. Against Coventry, he turned that promise into something more tangible: direct running, sharp combinations, end product.

Arsenal’s search for firepower

Arsenal’s recruitment team have not stopped looking. The club remain in the market for another left winger, having explored a blockbuster move for Vinicius Junior before the Brazilian committed his future to Real Madrid with a new contract at the Bernabeu.

The search has since widened. Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Kenan Yildiz have all been linked as the Gunners look to add more cutting edge in the final third. Any of those deals would require major investment, serious money for serious talent.

Carragher, though, suggested Arsenal may already have solved the problem that has nagged away at them on that flank: consistent goals and assists from the left.

On this evidence, Tzolis is intent on making that conversation more complicated.

Arteta “very happy” with instant impact

Mikel Arteta sounded just as enthused as Carragher after watching his new signing torment Coventry.

“I love that a player that has been with us just for a few weeks gets this kind of energy every time he’s on the ball. I think he’s earned it,” the Arsenal manager said.

“I think the way he has performed in the last few games has been phenomenal. What he transmits as a player is so direct, so incisive, constantly. He wants to make things happen, and he has done an incredible variety of actions in the last 30 metres.

“I think it’s up to him to make the right decisions. Even the spaces are sometimes really, really small. I’m very happy with him.”

Arteta also pointed to the context of the performance, stressing that this was no gentle introduction.

“It was great because the start is always tricky; we played a team that had a long time to prepare as well, and they are really good at what they do, but I’ve been really impressed with what I have seen so far.”

Arsenal will keep working the phones and running the numbers as the window ticks towards its close. But with Carragher purring, Arteta delighted and the Emirates already responding to Tzolis every time he receives the ball, the real question is shifting fast: do Arsenal need another left winger, or have they just found their next one?
