Chelsea Targets Boca Juniors Star Tomas Aranda Amid Transfer Battle

Chelsea are lining up a summer move for 19-year-old Boca Juniors playmaker Tomas Aranda, stepping into what is rapidly becoming one of the most crowded transfer chases of the year.

The Argentine outlet El Intransigente reports that Arsenal and Liverpool are also in the hunt, while the teenager’s emergence has already drawn eyes from across Europe and South America: Bayer Leverkusen, Como, Corinthians, City Football Group, Inter Milan, Parma and Sao Paulo FC are all tracking him. Any bidder knows the starting price – Aranda has a $20 million release clause written into his Boca contract.

Boca’s latest export-in-waiting

So who is Tomas Aranda? In Argentina, the answer is becoming clearer every week.

Born in Ciudadela, Aranda is the latest talent to come off the Boca Juniors production line. He rose through the youth ranks at the club before forcing his way into the first-team squad at the Alberto J. Armando Stadium, and his surge has already been rewarded with a debut for La Albiceleste.

This season has been his true breakout. The young playmaker has logged over 2,000 minutes across 32 senior appearances, contributing two goals and three assists. Those numbers only tell part of the story: his influence between the lines and his confidence on the ball have quickly marked him out as one of the most intriguing prospects in the Argentine game.

That rise has not gone unnoticed. Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool are now among the heavyweight contenders jostling for position in the race for his signature.

Chelsea’s South American push

Chelsea’s interest fits a clear pattern. The London club have thrown themselves into the South American market in recent years, aggressively stockpiling young talent from the continent.

Not every gamble has paid off under their current squad-building model, but some have already justified the strategy, with Estevao standing as a prominent example of how quickly a young import can catch fire. The belief around Aranda is that his profile could thrive on a similar trajectory, potentially under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, whose style of play places a premium on technical, inventive midfielders.

For Chelsea, Aranda would be another long-term bet on upside, a creative hub who can be moulded inside a high-tempo, possession-heavy structure.

Arsenal’s creative rethink

At Arsenal, the logic is more immediate.

The Gunners are searching for a versatile playmaker after two unsettled seasons from Martin Odegaard, whose influence has been disrupted by fitness issues, and an underwhelming debut campaign from Eberechi Eze. The club’s attempt to refresh the creative core has not fully landed, and missing out on Morgan Rogers only sharpened that need.

Aranda offers something different: a young, malleable option in the final third who can grow into the role over time. For a side that wants to keep the ball, control games and break down low blocks, a fresh creative spark on a long-term trajectory has obvious appeal.

Liverpool’s puzzle

Liverpool’s link to Aranda is more complicated.

Under Andoni Iraola, the squad already contains established playmakers, and the balance of the attack points towards a different priority. Aranda can operate off the left, but a specialist winger would more directly answer Liverpool’s current needs, given the creative depth already provided by Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai.

That leaves Liverpool in an interesting spot: admire the talent, or commit serious funds to a profile that does not quite sit at the top of their shopping list.

What is clear is this: a 19-year-old from Ciudadela with just over 2,000 senior minutes is now at the centre of a multi-club tug of war. Whoever triggers that $20 million clause will not just be buying potential; they will be making a statement about how they plan to build their midfield for the next decade.
