Chelsea Reject Leeds' First Bid for Mudryk as Loan Talks Continue

Chelsea have turned down Leeds United’s opening offer for Mykhailo Mudryk, but the move is very much alive, with talks described as ongoing after the first proposal fell well short of Stamford Bridge expectations, according to BBC Sport.

The winger wants out – at least temporarily. Mudryk is pushing for a switch to Elland Road in search of regular football after spending 20 months sidelined following a positive test for the banned substance meldonium. At 25, he needs minutes, not promises.

Leeds have surged to the front of the queue because they are prepared to take him on a straight loan with no option to buy. That detail matters. It keeps Chelsea in control of a player they committed an initial £62 million to in 2023, while giving Daniel Farke a high-upside addition without a long-term financial gamble.

If the deal gets over the line, Mudryk would become Leeds’ fifth signing of the summer.

Farke’s squad has already been reinforced with Harry Wilson, Tarik Muharemovic, James Trafford and Nico Elvedi, as the club gears up for their Premier League opener against Nottingham Forest on Saturday. Adding Mudryk’s pace and direct running to that group would be a statement that Leeds intend to attack this season, not just survive it.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are in clear trimming mode under Xabi Alonso. The club are cutting into the bloated squad he inherited, with several high-profile exits either completed or close. Axel Disasi has joined Crystal Palace, Benoit Badiashile is on his way to Napoli, and Atletico Madrid are finalising a £65m deal for Nicolas Jackson. Others, including Liam Delap and Dario Essugo, are still waiting to discover whether they fit into Alonso’s plans.

The Mudryk situation sits right in the middle of that reset. Chelsea want flexibility. Leeds want a starter. And they are not alone.

Brentford saw an earlier loan bid rejected after insisting on an option to buy, a condition Chelsea simply do not want attached. Coventry City are also tracking developments as they prepare to face Arsenal in the season’s curtain-raiser on Friday night, ready to pounce if the landscape shifts.

Options abroad exist on paper, but carry little weight in reality. A move to Strasbourg or Serie A has been floated, yet Mudryk’s preference is clear: he wants to stay in England. That stance narrows the field and keeps Leeds in a strong position as they push to reshape their attack before the deadline.

Alonso, asked about the winger’s future, kept his cards close to his chest:

“We will see, we still have time to decide and we don't have to rush on many decisions and at the right time, we will take them. At the moment, not yet.”

So Mudryk trains on at Cobham, part of Alonso’s group but with his representatives working in the background to secure a move that suits all sides. Leeds are expected to come back with a revised offer, encouraged by the player’s desire to join and Chelsea’s willingness to sanction a loan on their terms.

The clock is ticking.

With the season starting and the window edging towards its climax, the question is no longer whether Mudryk leaves on loan – it’s whose shirt he pulls on when the music stops.
