Chelsea Anxiously Await Joao Pedro's Fitness Update
Chelsea face an anxious wait over Joao Pedro’s fitness after the in-form forward pulled out of Brazil’s squad for the upcoming international break with a knee injury.
The Brazilian has been one of Chelsea’s brightest sparks at the start of the season, hitting three goals and laying on three assists in just four league games. He has quickly become central to Xabi Alonso’s attacking blueprint, knitting play together with Morgan Rogers and Cole Palmer and giving the Blues a cutting edge they have badly lacked in recent years.
That is why last weekend’s 2-2 draw with Hull City came with a sting. Joao Pedro is believed to have picked up the knee problem in that game, even though he stayed on and struck a late equaliser to salvage a point. The goal masked the concern. The aftermath did not.
He sat out training in the days that followed, as did Reece James, and neither made the squad for Friday night’s bruising 3-0 defeat at Brentford. Without him, Chelsea looked blunt. Danny Welbeck stepped in at the Gtech Community Stadium but struggled to mirror Joao Pedro’s movement or his understanding with Rogers and Palmer, and the attack lost its usual fluency.
Alonso has kept a tight lid on the situation. Before the Brentford loss, he admitted only that Joao Pedro would be given a late fitness test before the trip across west London, refusing to offer any clarity beyond that. The decision went against risking him, and Chelsea paid for it on the pitch.
Behind the scenes, though, the outlook is more encouraging.
Reports in Brazil from ESPN indicate Joao Pedro is facing around three weeks on the sidelines. That timeframe rules him out of Brazil’s two upcoming friendlies against Australia but points to a return in time for Chelsea’s next Premier League outing after the international break.
For Chelsea, that timing is crucial. The Blues are winless in three league matches and badly need a response when Bournemouth visit Stamford Bridge next month. By then, they expect Joao Pedro not just to be available, but sharp enough to resume his role as the focal point of Alonso’s front line.
If those reports prove accurate, Chelsea will have dodged a major bullet. The question now is simple: can they keep their season on track long enough for their new talisman to pick up where he left off?
