Chelsea 2026/27 Squad Numbers Overview

Chelsea’s new season always begins with a list. Names, numbers, and all the little clues about who really matters in the manager’s plans. For 2026/27, that list at Stamford Bridge carries a few jolts.

Most of last season’s squad keep their shirts. The spine remains familiar. But several key numbers have moved, and they tell a story of status, opportunity, and a few quiet demotions.

Joao Pedro takes the No 9

The headline switch sits on the back of Joao Pedro. The Brazilian has traded 20 for the iconic No 9, stepping into a shirt that has weighed heavily on many Chelsea forwards before him. Liam Delap, who wore it last season, slides down the pecking order numerically at least, dropping to 12.

It is a clear statement. Joao Pedro is now the central figure in Chelsea’s attack on paper, and likely in Xabi Alonso’s blueprint as well.

Fofana steps into No 3, Barco claims No 4

At the back, Wesley Fofana moves into the No 3 shirt, vacated after Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. That shift opens up No 29, which goes straight to summer signing Pep Chavarria, another nod to the new full-back’s expected involvement.

Tosin Adarabioyo also changes identity. He moves from No 4 to 38, with the No 4 shirt handed to new arrival Valentin Barco. It’s a classic early-season signal: the Argentine defender walks straight into a traditionally senior number, while Adarabioyo is nudged into the higher range.

Two more fresh faces get prime real estate. Marco Palestra takes No 2. Maxence Lacroix inherits No 5, a number previously worn by Benoit Badiashile.

Big names without numbers

The most telling detail may not be who has a number, but who doesn’t.

Badiashile, Axel Disasi, and Marc Guiu, all left out of the pre-season, have not been given squad numbers at all. Their absence from the list underlines their uncertain futures and underlines how sharply this Chelsea squad is being reshaped.

Henderson in 14, Rogers in 17

In midfield, Dario Essugo shifts from 14 to 16, making way for one of the summer’s most experienced arrivals. Jordan Henderson walks into No 14, a familiar-style number for a veteran leader expected to bring order and voice to a young dressing room.

Club-record signing Morgan Rogers takes No 17, previously worn by Andrey Santos, who has departed for Manchester United. Rogers’ number sits right in the bracket usually reserved for regulars rather than fringe players. Chelsea are not hiding how central they expect him to be.

Academy faces break through

The academy continues to feed the first team. Reggie Watson, Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli and Tayo Subuloye all receive squad numbers: 31, 32 and 37 respectively.

There has been no official confirmation that the trio are fully promoted, but their involvement in the pre-season tour across Australia and Asia, coupled with these numbers, suggests they are firmly in Alonso’s thoughts. They did enough in the summer to force their names onto this list; the next step is minutes under the lights.
