Breel Embolo Joins Switzerland's World Cup Squad After Visa Approval
Breel Embolo will finally join up with Switzerland’s World Cup squad in the United States after a late visa approval ended an anxious wait for one of Murat Yakin’s key forwards.
The Swiss federation confirmed on Thursday that the 29-year-old is expected to land in San Diego on Friday evening, reuniting with team-mates who flew out without him earlier in the week.
From airport goodbyes to embassy appointments
Embolo was supposed to be on the plane on Tuesday. Instead, as the rest of the squad departed for their pre-tournament base in California, he stayed behind in Switzerland, grounded by a last‑minute hitch when his ESTA travel authorisation was placed under further review.
What followed was an unwelcome sideshow. While Switzerland settled into their camp and began sharpening tactics, one of their primary attacking options was shuttling between lawyers and officials, waiting for clarity from U.S. authorities.
The pressure finally eased on Thursday.
"We have just been informed that Breel Embolo's visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening," the federation announced in a statement, drawing a line under several days of uncertainty.
Legal past under the microscope
The delay did not stem from footballing matters. American authorities ordered additional checks and summoned Embolo to the U.S. Embassy in Bern on Wednesday, where officials examined documents linked to a legal case dating back to a 2018 altercation in Basel.
U.S. officials also requested court records from a separate case: a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats, which led to a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year.
Both matters had already run their course in the Swiss legal system, but they triggered extra scrutiny under U.S. entry rules. Only after those checks were completed did the green light arrive and the visa was granted.
A timely boost for Switzerland
For Switzerland, the decision comes just in time. The coaching staff can now plan with a full complement of forwards, knowing that one of their most experienced attackers will step off a flight in San Diego and straight into World Cup preparations.
The paperwork is done. The questions are answered. Now Embolo’s next battle takes place where Switzerland need him most: on the pitch.
