Barcelona's Interest in Marcus Rashford: The Summer Saga Continues
When Barcelona unveiled Anthony Gordon earlier in the summer, it felt like the curtain call for Marcus Rashford’s Catalan adventure. He had done everything asked of him on loan. More than that, he had excelled. Yet when the moment came, Barcelona walked away from the purchase clause and chose a younger, longer-term project in Gordon.
Rashford went back to Old Trafford with his future clouded in uncertainty. Back as a Manchester United player, but not necessarily for long.
Barcelona keep the line open
According to TEAMtalk, the story is not finished. Barcelona have stayed in touch with Rashford’s camp, quietly testing the waters and keeping the possibility of a return alive as they reassess their forward options.
From the start, the Catalan club liked the idea of another loan. Rashford still has two years left on his United contract, and a temporary deal suited their finances and their flexibility. United thought differently. The Premier League side made it clear they would only entertain a permanent sale, a stance that helped explain why Barcelona walked away from their €30 million option despite Rashford delivering 28 goal contributions in all competitions last season.
So he went back to Manchester, not as a fringe figure, but as United’s highest-paid player. Michael Carrick has brought him back into the first-team fold, at least for now. He trains, he plays, he smiles for the cameras.
Yet the window is still open. And so is the exit door.
Barcelona remain in the frame, watching and waiting.
A growing problem in attack
Since the end of last season, Barcelona’s need for firepower has only sharpened. Rashford’s return to England was just the start of the exodus. Robert Lewandowski has gone. Ferran Torres has gone. Roony Bardghji, signed with such excitement, has been ruled out for the season through injury.
Gordon is in. Adeyemi is in. But no one inside the club pretends the job is complete. The forward line looks lighter, the options thinner, the margin for error smaller.
Rashford, for his part, would not hesitate. He would go back to Catalonia without a second thought. The question sits with United: would they soften and accept another loan, even one carrying an obligation to buy, or hold their ground on a straight permanent sale?
So far, there is no clear answer.
Tied to the Julian Alvarez chase
Rashford’s fate does not exist in isolation. It is tied tightly to Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez.
The club continue to push for the Argentine, but Atletico Madrid have not blinked. Their stance remains firm, and the negotiations have stalled in a stalemate that is beginning to squeeze Barcelona’s room to manoeuvre.
That deadlock changes the landscape. If Alvarez cannot be prised away, Rashford’s name moves rapidly back up the list. What looked like a closed chapter could flip back open in an instant.
For the moment, Rashford is still a Manchester United player, reintegrated and under contract, while debate rumbles on inside Old Trafford about his long-term role. Barcelona, though, have not locked that door.
They are content to leave it ajar, just in case this summer still has one more twist.
