Barcelona Reaches Agreement for Rodri in €76.5m Deal

Barcelona have moved to the front of the European transfer market again, reaching an agreement in principle to sign Manchester City midfielder Rodri in a deal worth around €76.5 million.

The two clubs are now exchanging paperwork to close the transfer, with only the final formalities standing between the Spain captain and a move to Camp Nou. Barring late complications, Rodri is expected in Barcelona in the coming days and could even be unveiled before Wednesday’s Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Al Ahly at Spotify Camp Nou.

City resisted at first. Barcelona saw two bids knocked back before returning over the weekend with a third offer that finally hit the Premier League champions’ valuation. With just one year left on Rodri’s contract at the Etihad Stadium, City were ready to cash in once the number was right.

Real Madrid also tried to lure him, tracking the situation closely, but once talks with Barcelona accelerated, sources say Rodri made it clear where he wanted to go. The Spain captain chose Catalonia.

Centrepiece of a furious summer rebuild

This is not a one-off splash. It is the centrepiece of a sweeping rebuild.

Rodri will arrive as part of a broader reset under Hansi Flick at Camp Nou. Fullback Joao Cancelo is set to rejoin as a free agent, with the pair becoming Barcelona’s fourth and fifth signings of a hectic summer window, after the arrivals of Anthony Gordon, Karim Adeyemi and Jesse Bisiwu.

Frenkie de Jong’s long-term injury forced Barcelona to look hard at the midfield market. Initially, Rodri was not at the top of the list. That changed once it became clear he could leave City, fresh from lifting the World Cup with Spain and dominating another major tournament.

The squad surgery is not over. Barcelona are still hunting a striker, with Atletico Madrid’s Julian Alvarez identified as the priority target following the exits of Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres. Torres has already agreed a move to Paris Saint-Germain, leaving a sizeable hole in Flick’s attacking options.

Bookmakers have reacted quickly. Football betting sites are already nudging Barcelona towards the front of the La Liga title odds, expecting Flick’s reshaped squad to mount another serious defence of their crown.

A serial winner lands in Catalonia

Rodri arrives with a CV that fits the word “statement”.

Formed at Villarreal and polished at Atletico Madrid, he joined Manchester City in 2019 after the English club triggered his €70m release clause, a then-record fee for City. From there he became the heartbeat of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Four Premier League titles, a Champions League, an FA Cup and an EFL Cup followed. When City needed control, they gave the ball to Rodri.

His path has not been smooth in recent seasons. A serious knee injury ruled him out for much of the 2024-25 campaign, and a hamstring problem disrupted last season. Once fit, he surged back to his peak this summer, leading Spain to World Cup glory and taking player of the tournament honours, just as he had at the previous European Championship.

That Euros triumph underpinned his Ballon d’Or win in 2024, confirmation of his status as the outstanding midfielder of his generation.

Inside Barcelona, Rodri is seen as more than just another big-name addition. Club sources describe him as a statement signing, the kind of anchor who can elevate Flick’s back-to-back Spanish champions again — from domestic rulers to a side built to dominate Europe.

Now the paperwork just needs a signature. Then the Camp Nou will get its first look at the man tasked with dictating Barcelona’s next era.
