Arsenal Target Kone as Italian Club Faces Financial Fair Play Pressure

Arsenal have stepped into a transfer race that Paris Saint-Germain walked away from – and they may be arriving at exactly the right moment.

The north London club are in advanced talks to sign French international Kone, having taken advantage of a gap left open by PSG and a looming financial deadline bearing down on his Serie A employers.

From Paris dream to Emirates opening

Kone had initially set his sights on a big-money move to PSG and turned down interest from Atletico Madrid, according to Corriere della Sera. Paris looked like the natural destination: French star, French giants, Champions League stage.

Then the phone stopped ringing.

With PSG showing no intention of turning admiration into a formal bid, the landscape changed. Arsenal moved quickly, opening negotiations with the player’s entourage and working towards an agreement over a move to the Emirates. The Gunners have not yet crossed the finish line, but they are now firmly in the lead.

Financial pressure in Serie A

The Italian club holding Kone’s registration are running out of time. Under intense pressure to comply with strict Financial Fair Play regulations before June 30, they need at least one major sale on the books.

They had initially placed a firm €50 million price tag on the midfielder, who has flourished under Gian Piero Gasperini and become one of Serie A’s standout performers in his role. That figure reflected his status as a centrepiece of their project.

The calendar, though, has become a negotiating weapon. With the deadline closing in, recruitment specialists now believe a structured deal worth around €45 million could be enough to secure his departure, giving Arsenal a narrow but real window to strike at a slightly reduced fee.

Arteta’s tactical puzzle

Mikel Arteta is said to view the powerful 25-year-old as a key piece in his evolving midfield. Arsenal have leaned heavily on Declan Rice to anchor and energise the centre of the pitch; at times, the England international has had to do the work of two players.

Kone offers something different. His ability to drive the ball forward at pace and circulate possession quickly through the lines could add a sharper tempo to Arsenal’s midfield, especially against packed defences. He does not just recycle the ball – he moves it with intent.

That profile stands in stark contrast to Martin Zubimendi, another long-term target. The Spain international’s more measured, slower rhythm has raised concerns about how naturally he would slot into Arteta’s fluid, high-speed system. Kone, by comparison, looks a more explosive fit for the Premier League’s intensity and the manager’s demands.

World stage, club decisions

For now, Kone’s attention turns away from the market and towards the biggest stage of all. He will join up with France as they begin their World Cup campaign, opening against a physically imposing Senegal side in what promises to be a demanding first test.

Behind the scenes, the work will not stop. The player’s representatives are pushing to accelerate the transfer before the Italian club’s end-of-month financial cut-off, knowing that delay could complicate both price and structure.

Arsenal, then, face a familiar challenge: act decisively, but get the numbers right. The timing of their first official bid, the layout of instalments, the add-ons – all of it must land perfectly if they are to turn a promising position into a marquee signing.

The opportunity is there. The question now is whether Arsenal are prepared to close it out while the clock, in Italy at least, is very much in their favour.
