Arsenal's Plan for Chido Obi Martin Amid Loan Interest

Mikel Arteta insists Arsenal will keep teenage sensation Chido Obi Martin close for now, despite growing interest in taking the 16-year-old on loan once he becomes eligible in January.

The forward underlined his potential with a ruthless brace against Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, another sharp reminder of how quickly he is adapting when handed first-team minutes.

That performance has only intensified the noise around him. Clubs have already approached Arsenal to ask about a possible loan move once he turns 17 at the end of December. For the moment, the door is shut.

Arteta made it clear the plan from the outset was to keep Obi Martin inside Arsenal’s walls.

“We haven't really listened to any of the possibilities because we were crystal clear that we wanted to have him in the squad,” Arteta said. “That we wanted him to be part of the pre-season and then start to see where we are from there.

“We will evaluate every six months, where we are and what is the best thing for him to do and then make the right decision.”

So nothing is completely off the table. Not even a loan at 17.

Arteta knows that path well. He left Barcelona for Paris Saint-Germain at the same age, and he referenced that experience as proof that an early move can work — under the right conditions.

“There have been many cases of that age when they have gone out and been successful and others not,” he said. “In my particular case I was 17 when I went to Paris. It depends on the atmosphere that you find there and how much the coach believes in you, whether you go there just to be part of a squad or play minutes. Which country, it depends.”

The calculation is complex and highly individual. Arsenal have already shown they are willing to wait before cutting the cord. After three years around the first team, they chose to send Ethan Nwaneri on loan to Marseille for the second half of last season, only once they felt the timing and destination were right.

Arteta framed Obi Martin’s situation in the same way: a rolling judgement call rather than a fixed plan.

“It depends on a lot of factors – what he needs and what the team needs as well, the availability we have in the squad, the minutes that he is playing and the qualities of those minutes.”

For now, the message is simple: Arsenal want him here, learning, scoring, growing. The real question is how long they can keep a talent like this in-house before the wider game comes calling again in January.
