Youri Tielemans Set for Manchester United Move
Youri Tielemans is closing in on a move to Manchester United, with the midfielder set to undergo a medical within the next 24 hours as Michael Carrick drives a ruthless overhaul of his engine room.
The interest in the Aston Villa player surfaced on Monday morning and caught many off guard. United, though, have not lingered. Once the opportunity appeared, they moved with purpose.
Fabrizio Romano reports that the 29-year-old is already travelling to Manchester for routine medical tests, which are expected to begin on Tuesday. If all goes as planned, Tielemans will then sign a long-term contract and become a central pillar of Carrick’s reshaped midfield.
This would be United’s second major addition in the middle of the park this summer, following the £50m signing of Andrey Santos from Chelsea.
That deal, too, was wrapped up with minimal fuss after a late collapse in negotiations for Atalanta’s Ederson, despite a £37m package having been agreed. Carrick and United’s recruitment team pivoted quickly then, and they are doing the same now.
Tielemans’ departure leaves Aston Villa with a sizeable hole to fill. His exit is expected to push the club back into the market, all the more so after his Belgium team-mate suffered an ACL rupture at the World Cup, further thinning their options.
For United, they are not just signing a name, but a player who reminded the world of his quality on the biggest stage last winter. Tielemans was one of Belgium’s standout performers at the World Cup, where they reached the quarter-finals before being knocked out by Spain. He scored twice in five appearances, both goals coming against Senegal in the last-32, and impressed across the group phase and in the last-16 tie with the United States.
Midfield Goals
Carrick wants control, craft and goals from midfield. Tielemans, if this move is completed as expected, arrives with a recent World Cup resume and the profile to change the rhythm of United’s season.
