Xabi Alonso's Chelsea Era Begins with Challenges
Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea era opens with a jolt, not a flourish.
Before he has even taken charge of a game in front of supporters, the new head coach has lost two of his summer recruits from the club’s pre-season tour of Australia and Asia. The planning board in his office already needs rearranging.
Chelsea have named a 27-man group for their camp in Sydney, with fresh signing Marco Palestra among the travelling party. The 19-year-old defender, brought in from Atalanta for £43 million, steps straight into Alonso’s eye line as he begins to shape a new back line.
New faces missing before they’ve really arrived
Emanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda, both officially secured this summer, are notable absentees from the tour squad.
Chelsea had agreed deals for Emegha from Strasbourg and Quenda from Sporting Lisbon before the window truly opened, but the pair only integrated with the group in recent weeks. Just as they were expected to bed in, the plans have been disrupted.
According to The Sun, Emegha, 23, suffered a hamstring injury in a behind-closed-doors friendly against League One side Bromley, a game Chelsea won 3-0. The Dutch striker even found the net in that match, only for his evening to unravel soon after his goal.
He now remains in England for treatment, his first pre-season under Alonso stalled before it really began.
Quenda’s situation is different, and more opaque. The 19-year-old Portuguese right winger has simply been left out of the travelling squad, with the club yet to disclose any reason for his omission. No explanation, no timeline, just a gap on the team sheet where a promising wide option was expected to be.
For a manager trying to assess every inch of his squad on a long-haul tour, it is far from ideal.
A tour without stars
Alonso’s group is further thinned by the World Cup. Several key players are unavailable after deep runs in the tournament, and Chelsea have opted to give them extended rest.
At the top of that list is Morgan Rogers, the club’s headline summer arrival at £117 million from Aston Villa. The England international, signed to be a central figure in the new project, will not be part of the early work in Sydney.
Club captain Reece James is also missing, granted time off after another long campaign that ended with World Cup duty for England. Their absence strips the tour of two of its most important reference points: the new attacking talisman and the established leader.
Alonso, then, begins pre-season with a squad that is both fresh and incomplete. New signing Palestra is on the plane. Rogers, James, Emegha and Quenda are not.
Behind closed doors, a glimpse and a setback
That low-key 3-0 win over Bromley, played away from cameras and crowds, briefly hinted at a smoother start. João Pedro, Jimmy-Jay Gittens and Emegha all scored, offering a snapshot of the attacking options Alonso could lean on.
Then came the hamstring pull that changed Emegha’s itinerary. One sharp movement, one muscle gone tight, and Chelsea’s new forward was suddenly out of the tour picture.
The club have not put a definitive timescale on his return, but there is a sliver of optimism. Both Emegha and Quenda could yet join up with the squad later in the tour if their respective situations clear. For Alonso, that would at least allow him some direct contact time before the serious business begins.
For now, though, his first weeks in charge will be spent without a clutch of players central to Chelsea’s long-term plans. A new coach, a reshaped squad, a global tour—and already, the margins are thin.
