World Cup Final Screening Turns Violent in Johor Bahru
What should have been a night of football drama on the screen turned ugly in real life when a World Cup final screening in Johor Bahru descended into a violent brawl.
Johor police chief Ab Rahaman Arsad said officers received a report of the incident at 5.40am, in the aftermath of the match between Spain and Argentina. Within hours, police moved in.
Between 10am and 11am, officers arrested several suspects around the Taman Setia Indah area, not far from where the chaos reportedly unfolded.
“All the suspects were arrested around the Taman Setia Indah area not long after the incident was reported. Checks found that three of the suspects have criminal records,” he was quoted as saying by Utusan Malaysia.
A two-minute, 36-second video has been circulating on social media, showing a mass brawl breaking out among spectators. The fight is believed to have started during the screening of the World Cup final, turning a shared viewing into a scene of flying fists and flaring tempers.
Rahaman said the suspects will be brought to the Johor Bahru magistrates’ court tomorrow for a remand application. Police are investigating the case under Section 148 of the Penal Code, which covers rioting with weapons — a serious charge that underlines just how far the night spiralled beyond football.
