World Cup Day 5 Review and Day 6 Preview

The World Cup showed a different side on Monday: no winners, just draws. All four matches ended level, each team walking away with a single point. That might sound dull, but the games held plenty of excitement and drama. Take Cape Verde’s impressive defensive stand against Spain, one of the tournament favorites, or the intense clash between Iran and New Zealand that kept fans glued late into the night. Everyone left Monday feeling like a winner in some way.

Spain 0-0 Cape Verde (Group H)

No goals here, but Cape Verde’s effort was extraordinary. They allowed Spain to dominate possession and even outshoot them by a wide margin yet defended relentlessly, conceding only one foul all match. This solid performance earned them a well-deserved draw, shaking up Group H and increasing the chances of a Spain-Argentina Round of 16 matchup.

Belgium 1-1 Egypt (Group G)

Belgium, not at their strongest this year, struggled against Egypt. Mohamed Salah's side took the lead early through Emam Ashour’s stunning strike. Belgium fought back, benefiting from an own goal to even the score. Romelu Lukaku made his presence felt inside the box despite looking a bit bulkier than before. Both teams have a shot at winning Group G, though it’s hard to tell who will come out on top.

Saudi Arabia 1-1 Uruguay (Group H)

This encounter turned physical, with many tough tackles and a referee struggling to maintain control. Saudi Arabia scored first, but Uruguay equalized later on. The match had its rough moments but ended fairly. Rodrigo Bentancur ran tirelessly for Uruguay but didn't change the outcome much. After the first round, all four teams in Group H have one point each.

Iran 2-2 New Zealand (Group G)

This was the most thrilling game of the day. Packed stadium, passionate Iranian fans, and a strong New Zealand side eager for their first World Cup win. New Zealand’s Elijah Just scored twice, tying him for the Golden Boot lead, while Iran battled back twice to level the match. Despite not being elegant football, the game was entertaining and worth staying up late to watch.
