Argentina's Dramatic Comeback and Switzerland's Penalty Triumph at World Cup Day 27
Argentina nearly faced elimination after falling behind twice to Egypt in their Round of 16 match in Atlanta. Yasser Ibrahim put Egypt ahead early, heading in a corner at the 15-minute mark. Shortly after, Lionel Messi had a chance to level from the penalty spot following a foul on Nico Tagliafico, but goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir guessed right and made the save.
Egypt thought they had doubled their lead through Mostafa Ziko’s counterattack finish, but VAR overturned it due to a foul against Lisandro Martinez at the start of the play. Not long after, Ziko scored again on another breakaway, this time with no dispute.
Argentina struggled to make an impact until the final 20 minutes, when they ramped up pressure. Cristian Romero headed in Messi’s cross in the 79th minute to bring Argentina back into the game. Moments later, the 39-year-old Messi himself struck powerfully on a loose ball, beating Shobeir for the equalizer.
With the match heading towards extra time, Lautaro Martinez delivered a cross that Enzo Fernandez met with a precise header to win the game. Messi was visibly emotional, shedding tears as Argentina celebrated the hard-fought victory. Despite being viewed as favorites on a supposedly easier side of the draw, Argentina have faced tough battles against both Cape Verde and Egypt, producing matches filled with drama and excitement.
Switzerland Advance After Tense Penalty Shootout Against Colombia
The encounter between Switzerland and Colombia in Vancouver was far less thrilling in open play, with both teams seeming to prepare for penalties early on. Colombia created more chances, especially during extra time where they outshot Switzerland 8-1, but failed to find the net.
During the shootout, Davinson Sanchez’s penalty struck the crossbar, allowing Switzerland to gain an advantage. Manuel Akanji then missed his kick by shooting over the bar, but Colombia could not capitalize when Juan Hernandez’s shot was saved by Gregor Kobel. Cedric Itten and Luis Diaz traded successful penalties before Ruben Vargas secured the win for Switzerland under coach Murat Yakin.
