World Cup Round of 32: Spain Seeks First Knockout Win Since 2010; Ronaldo Faces Croatia

The 2026 World Cup Round of 32 continues on Thursday with three matches that will shape the Round of 16 bracket. Spain, the current European champions, are hoping to secure their first knockout victory since lifting the World Cup in 2010. They topped Group H with two wins and a draw, setting up a clash against Austria. The Austrians have not progressed past the group stage since 1954, making this a tough challenge for them.

With several surprises already in this tournament, the question remains whether Austria can pull off an upset against one of soccer’s giants.

Portugal and Ronaldo Look for Knockout Success

Later on Thursday, Portugal will face Croatia in Toronto. Cristiano Ronaldo has appeared in eight World Cup knockout games without scoring, and both he and his team hope to change that trend. Croatia bounced back from an opening loss to England with two straight wins to reach this point.

Portugal has controlled possession well but struggled to create chances, managing only 12 shots on target over three matches. The winner here will meet either Spain or Austria in the next round.

Switzerland and Algeria Battle for a Round of 16 Spot

The final match on Thursday pits Switzerland against Algeria in Vancouver. Algeria hasn’t beaten a European team at the World Cup since 1982 and will need to contain Switzerland’s Johan Manzambi, who has netted three goals so far. Switzerland’s unbeaten streak under coach Murat Yakin now stands at nine games.

The victor will face either Colombia or Ghana in the Round of 16.
