FIFA World Cup 2026: Teams Moving into the Round of 16
The 2026 FIFA World Cup has expanded to include 48 teams across Mexico, Canada, and the United States. This change introduced a new knockout stage format starting with a Round of 32 instead of the traditional Round of 16.
The Round of 32 began on Sunday, featuring 16 matches to reduce the contenders to just 16 teams. These teams now fight for a spot in the next round, and here’s a look at those who have already secured their advancement.
Canada
Canada was the first team to secure a place in the Round of 16. Stephen Eustaquio scored a stunning goal in stoppage time against South Africa, breaking the deadlock in the 92nd minute. Despite South Africa's efforts to equalize, time ran out. Canada will face the winner between Morocco and the Netherlands.
Brazil
Brazil advanced after a challenging match against Japan. Japan took the lead through Kaishu Sano’s impressive solo effort, but Brazil responded with a goal from Casemiro. Gabriel Martinelli clinched the win for Brazil deep in stoppage time. Their next opponent will be either Norway or Ivory Coast.
Paraguay
Paraguay stunned Germany by winning 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw in regular and extra time. Jose Canale scored the decisive penalty in the sixth round. Paraguay will meet the winner of France versus Sweden.
Morocco

Norway
