World Cup 2026 Knockout Round Outlook: Teams’ Paths to the Round of 32 as Group Stage Ends
The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is nearing its conclusion, with the Round of 32 lineup beginning to take shape. Thirty-two teams will advance after the group phase, including the top two from each group plus the eight best third-place teams.
Several squads have already punched their tickets to the knockout round, such as the U.S. men’s national team and Mexico. Others have faced early exits after only two games. The remaining teams are calculating scenarios, battling for spots in the Round of 32 during the last group matches.
Group A
Mexico has secured first place and will meet a third-place team in the next round. For South Korea, a win or draw versus South Africa guarantees progression as group runner-up. Czechia must defeat Mexico and hope South Africa wins too, which could bring goal difference into play for second place. South Africa can also reach second with a win and favorable results elsewhere. The key takeaway: South Korea advances on a draw; Czechia and South Africa need wins plus help.
Group B
Canada and Switzerland both have four points and face off with first place at stake. Canada moves on with a win or draw, securing first place by avoiding defeat. Switzerland also advances with a win or draw and takes the group if victorious. Bosnia-Herzegovina and Qatar still have chances but need big wins plus help. Canada aims to stay in Vancouver for the next round if it tops the group.
Group C
First place remains open here. Brazil secures top spot with a win over Scotland. Morocco advances with a win or draw against Haiti and can top the group by overturning Brazil’s goal difference. Scotland can clinch a knockout berth by beating Brazil and might even finish first if Morocco slips. Haiti is eliminated. Scotland could advance with a draw depending on other results.
Group D
USA has locked up first place and will face a third-place team on July 1 in Santa Clara. Australia can clinch second with a win or draw against Paraguay. Paraguay needs a win to guarantee top two but could advance as one of the best third-place teams. Türkiye is out. Australia and Paraguay meet with second place on the line.
Group E
Germany is through and faces a third-place opponent next. Ivory Coast can secure second place with a win over Curaçao and would advance with a draw unless Ecuador beats Germany by two or more goals. Ecuador and Curaçao remain alive but require wins and major goal-difference shifts.
Group F
The Netherlands tops Group F on goal difference but first place and both qualifying spots remain contested. Japan secures advancement with a win or draw against Sweden. Sweden needs a victory to qualify directly. The Netherlands can ensure progression with a win over Tunisia and remains well placed regardless. Tunisia is eliminated.
Group G
Egypt can seal Group G and a knockout spot with a win over Iran. Belgium must defeat New Zealand and rely on an Egypt victory to qualify. Iran also needs a win plus help. New Zealand stays alive only with a win against Belgium.
Group H
Spain looks set to claim Group H, needing a win or likely even a draw against Uruguay. Cape Verde and Uruguay compete for the other automatic spot. Cape Verde advances with a win and possibly with a draw if Spain wins. Uruguay progresses with a win or possibly a draw if Cape Verde fails to win. Saudi Arabia requires a win and assistance.
Group I
France and Norway have qualified already, but first place is undecided. Their Friday match decides who wins the group and secures a better knockout path. Senegal and Iraq face off with third place and survival on the line. The loser is eliminated.
Group J
Argentina has advanced and claimed Group J. Algeria and Austria battle for second place; the winner advances, while a draw leaves them waiting on third-place results. Jordan is out.
Group K
Colombia has reached the Round of 32 and can seal top spot with a draw against Portugal. Portugal would clinch advancement with a draw as well. DR Congo and Uzbekistan face each other needing wins and probably help to avoid relying on third-place qualification.
Group L
The race for the top two in Group L remains tight. England leads on goal difference and can secure first with a win over Panama. Ghana and Croatia clash for a place in the knockout stage and possibly first place. Panama is eliminated but may spoil England’s plans.
How Ties Are Decided in the Group Stage
The top two teams from each group move on automatically, along with the eight best third-place teams. If teams tie on points, FIFA breaks ties using head-to-head points, goal difference, and goals scored, followed by overall goal difference and goals scored, disciplinary records, and finally FIFA rankings if necessary.
