Why Cristiano Ronaldo Is Missing Portugal’s Match Against Norway
Jorge Jesus has kicked off his management of Portugal with three straight wins. He narrowly defeated Wales in his first game and then secured victories against both Norway and Denmark on challenging away grounds. Portugal currently leads its UEFA Nations League group with a perfect record.
Despite these positive results, tensions have surfaced during Jesus’s early days as manager.
The Ronaldo Controversy
Cristiano Ronaldo, the iconic striker, has become the focal point of unrest during this international break. At 41 years old, Ronaldo won’t be playing in Portugal’s upcoming match against Norway.
Reasons Behind Ronaldo’s Absence
Ronaldo’s frustration boiled over after being sidelined by Jesus, who previously coached him at Al Nassr. Following a poor performance against Wales that led to an early substitution, Ronaldo was benched for the next game in Oslo against Norway. Although Jesus promised him some playing time, Ronaldo remained unused as Portugal edged a 2–1 victory.
Jesus chose to protect Portugal’s slim lead rather than bring Ronaldo on late in the match. Afterward, Jesus stated, “I can promise whatever I want, I’m the coach. No player will ever make a decision for me.”
Unsurprisingly, Ronaldo was angry about both his benching and Jesus’s comments. He promptly left the Portugal camp, ruling himself out of the 4–2 win over Denmark and the upcoming home fixture versus Norway.
“After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp,” Ronaldo wrote on social media. “In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”
Fan Support and Backlash
Many fans have rallied behind Ronaldo, honoring his 23 years representing Portugal and his legendary status. Billboards appeared in Lisbon and surrounding areas expressing gratitude and support. They read: “Thank you Cristiano Ronaldo for everything you’ve done for Portugal. You will always be our captain. Portugal is always with you.”
These displays also criticized Jorge Jesus, accusing him of mistreating Ronaldo and having an inflated ego. The situation remains tense within the Portuguese Football Federation as the saga unfolds.
Upcoming Match Preview
Ronaldo's absence will again dominate discussions ahead of Portugal’s game against a Norway side led by Erling Haaland. This ongoing dispute raises questions about Ronaldo’s future role with the national team, casting a shadow over the squad despite their strong start under Jesus.
