WBC Mandates William Zepeda vs Jadier Herrera for Lightweight Title Unification
The World Boxing Council (WBC) has ordered a rare title unification fight between reigning lightweight champion William Zepeda and interim titleholder Jadier Herrera. Both fighters have until October 20th to finalize an agreement for the bout.
With Shakur Stevenson moving up to super lightweight to challenge Teofimo Lopez, Herrera seized the opportunity to fight Ricardo Nunez for the interim lightweight belt. Herrera impressed by decisively defeating the veteran Nunez. Meanwhile, the WBC stripped Stevenson due to unpaid sanctioning fees. Instead of simply promoting Herrera or setting a vacant title match, the organization allowed Zepeda (34-1, 27 KOs) to claim the full title after his victory over Lamont Roach Jr in August.
What This Means For The Lightweight Division
Zepeda stands as a formidable opponent in the post-Stevenson era. At 24 years old, his most notable win was against a less challenging adversary following a disqualification loss to Jon Fernandez. Despite this, both Zepeda and promoter Frank Warren are eager for the fight.
Unless Zepeda pursues a unification bout with Abdullah Mason or decides to vacate his title, it looks likely that Herrera will earn his chance to unify the belts.
- Jadier Herrera's Record: 18-0, 16 KOs
- William Zepeda's Record: 34-1, 27 KOs
- Deadline for Negotiations: October 20, 2026
