Wales First to Withdraw Support for Gianni Infantino’s FIFA Presidency Amid Controversy

Gianni Infantino faces uncertainty over his future as FIFA president after Wales became the first country to withdraw its backing for his re-election in 2027. The Swiss official, who has held the presidency since February 2016, had planned to seek another term. Yet, growing dissatisfaction within the global football community is challenging his leadership.

Backlash Over FIFA Forward Enterprise Proposal

Infantino's reputation took a hit following FIFA's decision to cancel plans for third-party minority investments in a new subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE). This entity was meant to manage commercial rights for future tournaments. Numerous football associations worldwide opposed this move, prompting FIFA to reverse course on August 1. UEFA and the English FA notably rejected the plan, with all 55 European members initially supporting a boycott of FIFA competitions, including both men’s and women’s World Cups.

“The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was intended to strengthen our Member Associations and football worldwide, especially where support is most needed,” Infantino said. “But after listening carefully, it became clear the project caused divisions that go against our goals. Therefore, it will not proceed.”

He added that his aim remains to unite football stakeholders and focus on growing the game globally, particularly in countries requiring more assistance.

Wales Officially Withdraws Support

On August 3, the Football Association of Wales (FAW) publicly announced it no longer supports Infantino’s candidacy for the 2027-2031 term. The FAW cited failures in governance, leadership, communication, and judgement as reasons for withdrawing confidence. The association emphasized that prioritizing football’s best interests must come first.

The FAW has also reportedly sent a formal letter to FIFA outlining its position.

Other Associations Call for Change

• Dutch FA (KNVB) expressed that trust has been fundamentally broken by how the FFE proposal was handled, withdrawing confidence in Infantino.
• Norwegian FA welcomed the proposal’s withdrawal but urged for a cultural shift away from fear and political games toward openness.
• German FA President Bernd Neuendorf criticized Infantino for unilateral and opaque decisions, calling them irresponsible for football’s best interests.

Upcoming Election Details

The next FIFA presidential election is scheduled for March 18, 2027, during the 77th FIFA Congress in Rabat, Morocco. Each of FIFA’s 211 member associations holds one vote, making the collective opinions of these bodies decisive for Infantino’s bid.
