Arsenal have made their move. Vinicius Junior, though, still has his heart set on Real Madrid.
The Premier League champions, fresh from ending a 22-year wait for the title and coming within a penalty shoot-out of lifting the Champions League, are hunting for the kind of attacking upgrade that can keep them at the summit. Their first big swing of the summer, Morgan Rogers, slipped away when Chelsea dropped £117m to prise the Aston Villa playmaker to west London. Arsenal simply refused to follow.
So the crosshairs shifted to a far bigger star.
With just a year left on his Real Madrid contract, Vinicius has emerged as Arsenal’s headline target. The Brazilian is exactly the type of player Mikel Arteta craves: explosive, proven on the biggest stage, and capable of bending games to his will. A winger of that calibre rarely comes onto the market with his future unresolved.
On Friday, the Arsenal-focused X account HandofArsenal lit the fuse. It claimed that Arsenal and Vinicius had agreed personal terms “in principle” ahead of a potential summer transfer, adding that his representatives at Roc Nation were preparing to go into talks with Real armed with a “monstrous offer” from the English champions. The message was clear: Arsenal are serious, and the next move belongs to Vinicius.
The account doubled down, insisting it expected Roc Nation to deny the story but was standing by its information. “The ball is in Vini Jnr’s court,” it said.
Then came a twist.
According to Football Insider reporter Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the outlet’s podcast, the player himself is not pushing for the exit door at all. Quite the opposite. O’Rourke says Vinicius “ideally would like to renew his contract at Real Madrid”, underlining the scale of the challenge facing Arsenal.
“It’s going to be difficult deal to do, there’s no getting away from that. Real Madrid don’t really want to lose Vinicius Junior,” O’Rourke said. Arsenal, he added, are “exploring the possibility if there is any chance he could leave”, knowing full well he “would fit the bill” as a world-class addition who would “definitely improve their squad”.
So the picture is stark. Arsenal want him. Real Madrid want to keep him. Vinicius, for now, wants to stay.
The tension lies in the contract.
TEAMtalk report that Real Madrid are unwilling to let Vinicius drift towards the final year of his deal without clarity. The club, the report says, do not want to “risk Vinicius entering the final year of his contract without an agreement in place”. If talks fail to produce a breakthrough, the stance is firm: they would rather sell this summer than watch one of their most valuable assets walk away for nothing in 2027.
That pressure changes the landscape. Arsenal are not circling a content, long-term Madrid star. They are probing a fault line between a club and a player whose futures are not yet fully aligned on paper, even if the Brazilian’s preference is to stay.
Over the next few weeks, the situation will sharpen. O’Rourke expects negotiations over a new Real Madrid deal to accelerate before the window closes and before Vinicius returns for pre-season. If an agreement lands, Arsenal’s pursuit dies quickly. If it stalls, the champions of England will be waiting, cheque book open, convinced that Vinicius is the statement signing to elevate an already ruthless attack.
Real Madrid do not want to lose him. Vinicius does not want to leave. Arsenal, though, are betting that contract pressure and a huge offer can bend that reality.
