Arsenal’s boldest attacking dream of the summer is over. Vinicius Jr is staying at Real Madrid.
The Brazil international has agreed an improved contract with the Spanish giants after talks on Wednesday, according to The Athletic, ending any realistic prospect of a move to north London.
For Arsenal, Vinicius was not a fantasy name scribbled on a whiteboard. At 26, he had been identified as a leading target, the kind of statement signing the club were prepared to commit heavily to if the opportunity arose. Those inside the Emirates believed that if negotiations between Vinicius and Madrid collapsed, they would be ready to pounce.
That opening never came.
Madrid pay to keep their man
The new package on the table at the Bernabeu underlines how central Vinicius has become to Real Madrid’s project. The Brazilian had been pushing for a salary in the region of €30 million per year, along with improved image rights. His current deal, due to expire next summer, is worth around €17.5m annually.
Reports in Spain indicate a compromise of roughly €25m a year has now been agreed. Not the full figure Vinicius was seeking, but a clear step up that reflects his status as one of Madrid’s cornerstone players.
The Athletic also report that Vinicius had been open to joining Arsenal if talks with Real Madrid broke down. That conditional interest gave the Gunners just enough encouragement to keep the lines warm and their hopes alive. Once Madrid moved decisively, those hopes disappeared.
Arsenal pivot to Plan B
Arsenal, for their part, have wasted little time in changing course. With the Vinicius avenue closed, the club have already moved on to alternative attacking options, with a versatile left-sided forward still viewed as the key piece missing from Mikel Arteta’s squad.
The Daily Mail report that Arsenal have been monitoring several forwards while simultaneously trying to persuade the Real Madrid star to make the leap to the Premier League. That persuasion job is now finished, and the recruitment team’s attention is fixed firmly elsewhere.
Arteta remains determined to strengthen his frontline before the transfer window shuts. The brief is clear: someone who can operate from the left, stretch defences, and add goals to support the existing core.
Before that final push up front, another piece of business is close. Bruno Guimaraes is expected to be confirmed as Arsenal’s fourth signing of the summer, a significant addition in midfield that should give Arteta greater control and balance behind his forwards.
The big swing for Vinicius Jr has missed. The question now is whether Arsenal can still find the kind of attacking signing that turns a smart window into a transformative one.
