Rafael van der Vaart Critiques Ajax Defender Jorthy Mokio After Conference League Win
Rafael van der Vaart openly criticised Ajax defender Jorthy Mokio following their 5-3 victory over Sion in the UEFA Conference League. The former Dutch international warned that the young Belgian lacks the professionalism needed at senior level and may overestimate his current abilities.
A Thrilling but Flawed Victory
Ajax managed to secure an exciting 5-3 win against Sion, yet the match exposed defensive weaknesses that drew attention from experts. Despite scoring more goals, Ajax’s backline appeared vulnerable, raising concerns about their stability in European competition.
Van der Vaart’s Sharp Critique
On Ziggo Sport, Van der Vaart highlighted Mokio's attitude and discipline, suggesting the youngster plays with an unrealistic sense of confidence. He said,
"I'm afraid he thinks he's much better than he actually is. Or than he is at the moment, so to speak. It seems like he just wants to play football, but it’s not youth football anymore, you know? You have to be very professional."
Tactical Concerns Beyond Individual Performance
The former midfielder also pointed out a broader issue with Ajax’s formation, explaining how their wide positioning leaves them exposed on counter-attacks. This tactical vulnerability causes chaos inside their penalty box when possession is lost.
- Van der Vaart: "Ajax tends to play too wide. It was evident today as well: when they lost the ball, they immediately became extremely dangerous. Everyone enters the penalty area with their back to goal. That really needs to improve."
What Lies Ahead for Ajax
Though Ajax advanced in the Conference League, Van der Vaart’s warning signals the urgent need for manager Michel to fix these defensive problems. Addressing their transition from attack to defence and narrowing their formation could prevent future difficulties. For players like Mokio, this criticism might be a crucial step in adapting to the demands of top-level football.
