Valencia Nears Agreement with Javier Aguirre as New Coach
Valencia’s search for a new coach is closing around a familiar La Liga figure. After Carlos Corberan’s exit, sporting director Braulio Vázquez has spent the last few days working quietly behind the scenes, and Javier Aguirre has surged to the front of the queue.
According to MARCA, a key conversation on Friday brought negotiations with Aguirre’s camp to the brink of an agreement. Both sides pushed to align the final details, and those close to other candidates approached by Vázquez already admit it: the Mexican is out in front to take charge of the Blanquinegros.
Aguirre, the veteran firefighter
Inside the club, there is little doubt about the profile they want. At 67, Aguirre is seen as the right man to jolt a drifting squad back into life. His long résumé, strong dressing-room presence and deep knowledge of Spanish football have made him the preferred option.
If he signs, Valencia would become the seventh La Liga club of his career. His track record in Spain runs through Osasuna, Atletico Madrid, Real Zaragoza, Espanyol, Leganes and Mallorca. He is currently a free agent after finishing his spell in charge of Mexico following the 2026 World Cup.
The pressure on Valencia’s season shapes the deal. Aguirre is asking for a contract until the end of the current campaign, with an option to extend into next year. That extra year is not automatic; it hinges on clear objectives, above all securing the club’s place in the top flight.
Money not the main battle
On this occasion, the numbers are not expected to derail talks. Both sides are working under the assumption that financial terms will be manageable, clearing the way for a relatively swift agreement once the sporting conditions are fully aligned.
The real complication came earlier in the process. Valencia’s first choice, Ernesto Valverde, rejected the proposal and chose to prolong his sabbatical, forcing the board to pivot and accelerate discussions with Aguirre.
Interim charge and a window of opportunity
There is no rush to unveil the new coach. Oscar Sanchez will lead the team from the dugout for this weekend’s trip to Real Sociedad, giving the hierarchy a little breathing space to finalise the last details with Aguirre.
The calendar also helps. The upcoming three-week international break offers a rare window in a congested season, and the club plan to hand the incoming manager that period as a mini pre-season at Paterna. For a veteran used to taking over troubled dressing rooms, it could be the perfect launchpad for yet another rescue mission in La Liga.
