Who Will the USMNT Face in the 2026 World Cup Knockout Stage?

After securing first place in Group D, the United States men's national team is locked into the Round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup. But their next opponent remains a complex puzzle influenced by group results and FIFA's intricate rules.

Understanding the Knockout Bracket

In the new 48-team format, each group's top two teams move on, along with the eight best third-place finishers. The US will take the "1D" spot in the bracket’s bottom-left quadrant, facing one of the third-place teams from Group B, E, F, I, or J.

Potential Opponents

  • Group B: Canada, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Qatar, Switzerland
  • Group E: Germany, Curaçao, Ivory Coast, Ecuador
  • Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden, Tunisia (already eliminated)
  • Group I: France, Senegal, Norway, Iraq
  • Group J: Argentina, Algeria, Austria, Jordan

Currently, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ecuador, Sweden, Senegal, and Jordan hold third place in these groups. Of these, only Ecuador and Sweden rank among the top eight third-place teams likely to advance. But things are shifting rapidly.

FIFA’s Matrix of Possibilities

FIFA’s Annex C outlines 495 different combinations for which third-place teams progress, determining matchups in the knockout round. Right now, the US is poised to face the third-place team from Group E—Ecuador—based on the current standings (combination 283).

Still, many scenarios point toward a matchup with the Group B third-place side. This largely depends on Wednesday’s final Group B game between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar.

Odds and Updates

Expecting Goals estimates a 60% chance the US meets Bosnia and Herzegovina, a 17% chance for Qatar, 6% for Senegal, and 4% for Ecuador. These odds fluctuate as results come in.

"With Bosnia and Herzegovina clinching third place in Group B, they have become the most probable Round of 32 opponent for the US," analysts said.

After the Jordan vs. Algeria match, Algeria moved into third in Group J, shifting the possible opponents yet again. As of June 23, Algeria stands as the likely US adversary. Still, the picture may change before the knockout stage begins.

Confirmed Matchup

On Thursday night, it was officially announced that the USMNT will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 1 in the Round of 32.

We will continue tracking updates as the tournament progresses. The final opponent could hinge on the last group stage matches and the evolving FIFA matrix.
