Unai Emery Faces Challenges as Leon Goretzka Injury Hits Ahead of Aston Villa's Champions League Clash
Unai Emery Confronts Midfield Setback Before Key European Match
Unai Emery, the manager of Aston Villa, is preparing for an important Champions League match against Club Brugge while dealing with the absence of Leon Goretzka. The German midfielder, who joined Villa Park on a free transfer after a successful spell at Bayern Munich, remains sidelined due to an injury setback that has delayed his debut for the club.
Goretzka's Injury Impacting Villa’s Midfield Options
Emery openly expressed frustration over losing a player of Goretzka's caliber just as the season begins. The 31-year-old was expected to bring valuable experience to a restructured midfield but has been held back by a physical reaction to increased training intensity following a period of limited play in Germany. This injury has forced Villa's coaching team to explore other options amid a challenging start to their domestic campaign.
"Goretzka’s issue is a bit frustrating, but we have players who can replace him. When he’s coming back, hopefully he can get the consistency in training and playing and we can add his experience. He is a player who will help us in different competitions with the level he has," said Emery.
Goretzka Updates Fans on Recovery
The midfielder addressed supporters on social media, explaining that his body struggled to adapt to the new workload after a spell away from regular matches. He anticipates needing about a month before returning to action, which means he won’t play until after the upcoming international break.
"Unfortunately, my body has reacted to the increased workload after my time away from the pitch. It’s frustrating, but I need this short break now to come back at full strength. I’ll use the coming days, including the international break, to recover fully," Goretzka shared.
Villa Seeks Momentum in Europe Amid Domestic Woes
The Premier League campaign has started poorly for Aston Villa, with just one draw and two losses from their opening three games. This contrasts sharply with the optimism they enjoyed at last season’s end. Emery believes the team showed signs of progress in their recent performances but knows results must improve.
"I think the last match…we showed, collectively, some improvements. We started (with) the Premier League as our objective at the end of the season, and we are progressing. Still not enough, because we are not getting good results, but tomorrow is a new test, and a new test in Europe," Emery commented.
He added that qualifying for the Champions League remains a proud achievement, marking a new chapter for the club as they aim to maintain high standards.
A Tough Test Awaits in Belgium
Aston Villa travels to face Club Brugge in Belgium, aiming to erase memories of a 1-0 defeat in their last Champions League encounter in 2024. Emery will miss both Goretzka and the injured Johan Manzambi but gains a boost with the return of Joao Gomes after suspension.
Club Brugge is in strong form domestically, having won four of their first five matches this season, presenting a stern challenge for Villa.
