UEFA Introduces Swiss Format for European Qualifiers Starting 2028
UEFA Overhauls European International Football Qualifiers
International football is on the edge of a major transformation. UEFA is set to approve in Thessaloniki a shift to the Swiss format, the same system used in the club Champions League. This change will affect the Nations League as well as the qualifiers for both the World Cup and European Championships starting from 2028, according to AS.
A New League Structure with 36 Teams
The existing group stage setup will be replaced by a league consisting of 36 national teams. Each nation will play six matches—three at home and three away—against opponents with varying skill levels. The goal is to reduce predictable fixtures and boost the appeal and value of broadcasting rights.
Calendar Changes and Venue Announcement
FIFA plans to introduce double international windows, allowing each national team to complete four matches within a 15-day period. Additionally, Camp Nou has been confirmed as the site for the 2029 Champions League final.
