Tottenham Target Cody Gakpo for Ambitious Attack Rebuild
Tottenham are preparing another jolt to the transfer market, and this time the spotlight has swung to Anfield.
After a summer of heavy early spending, Spurs are now circling Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo as part of an ambitious double swoop for wide forwards, with the Dutchman emerging as a leading candidate to reshape Ange Postecoglou’s attack.
Spurs reload after £237m spree
Tottenham have already torn into this window with intent. A combined £237m has gone on Jan Paul van Hecke, Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali, major investments through the spine of the side.
They have not stopped there. Martin Dubravka, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson arrived on free transfers, smart depth pieces that plug gaps at both ends of the pitch. Goalkeeper? Covered. Defence? Reinforced. Midfield? Rebuilt.
The glaring area left is the frontline. That is where the next wave is aimed.
Savinho first, Gakpo next?
On the right, Spurs have zeroed in on Manchester City’s Savinho. The Brazilian has already told City he wants out and, crucially for Tottenham, is keen on the move to north London.
Club-to-club talks have been running for some time, with the expectation that a package of around £60m could get it done. If that falls into place, Postecoglou gets a direct, explosive winger to stretch defences on one flank.
The original plan on the other side looked very different. TEAMtalk revealed that Spurs were less than 24 hours from launching an opening bid for Bournemouth forward Eli Junior Kroupi when disaster struck. A fractured metatarsal, surgery, and a three-to-four month lay-off ended any chance of a summer move.
That forced Tottenham to pivot. Fast.
Gakpo becomes the “leading contender”
Into that space steps Cody Gakpo.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano recently flagged the situation, telling Men in Blazers: “Keep an eye on Tottenham Hotspur and Cody Gakpo in the next weeks. They really like the player.” The admiration inside Spurs is clear, and the tempo around his name is rising.
On Saturday, journalist Paul O’Keefe sharpened the picture on X, describing Gakpo as “a leading contender” as Tottenham look to add to their attacking options. From one of several names on a list, the 27-year-old has moved to the front row.
It is not hard to see why. Gakpo is at his most dangerous starting off the left, driving inside with that long stride and clean strike. But his Liverpool spell has also shown he can lead the line as a central striker when needed.
For Tottenham, that versatility is gold. Kroupi would have offered similar flexibility across the front. Gakpo brings it now, with the added weight of Champions League and international experience.
Liverpool set a Premier League benchmark price
There is, of course, the matter of cost.
Anfield Watch report that Liverpool have set their valuation at a hefty £72m (€85m), using Anthony Gordon’s £69m move to Barcelona as the benchmark. “Anfield Watch understands Liverpool have priced Cody Gakpo at £72m,” they wrote on X. “They’ve used Anthony Gordon’s move to Barcelona as a base for their valuation.”
Liverpool’s stance is clear: if Gakpo goes, he goes for elite money. For Spurs, already deep into a summer of spending, that figure represents a serious decision point rather than a casual opportunity.
Yet the logic from Liverpool’s side is obvious. A 27-year-old Dutch international, capable across the front line, in a market where wide forwards and hybrid strikers are commanding premium fees. They are pricing him as such.
A defining swing in Spurs’ attacking rebuild
So the picture is set. Savinho on the right, Gakpo on the left or through the middle, both at the peak of their athletic years, both capable of transforming the tempo and unpredictability of Postecoglou’s attack.
Tottenham are front and centre in this chase. The admiration is there, the need is obvious, and the market has named its price.
Now comes the question that will shape the rest of their window: after £237m already committed, do Spurs push again and pay Liverpool’s number for Cody Gakpo, or does this ambitious rebuild stop one marquee signing short?
