Tottenham Signs Alice Sombath in Club-Record Deal
Tottenham have gone to Lyon and come back with a defender shaped like a declaration of intent.
Alice Sombath, fresh from a haul of trophies in France and a breakout summer with the national team, has joined Spurs for a club-record fee, underlining just how serious the north London side are about accelerating their rise in the women’s game.
The fee is undisclosed, the contract length kept under wraps, but the scale of the move is clear enough. It eclipses the deal that brought Norway international Signe Gaupset to the club for a figure believed to be around £375,000 last year. Spurs are now paying Champions League prices for Champions League pedigree.
From Lyon’s winning machine to Spurs’ ambitious project
At 22, Sombath already carries the weight of a seasoned winner. Five seasons at European powerhouse Lyon brought 102 appearances, five consecutive Première Ligue titles and a place in the 2021-22 Women’s Champions League-winning squad. She has grown up inside a dressing room where winning is not a target but a baseline expectation.
That background is exactly what Tottenham are buying.
Sombath arrives as a full France international, having represented her country at every age group from under-16s to the senior side. She featured in all of France’s matches at Euro 2025, starting three games in the group stage and showing the kind of composure and versatility that has made her one of the most coveted young defenders in Europe.
“I want to do my best here at Tottenham. I think the league is very competitive, every game is tough and that's what I'm most excited about,” she said on signing. She has watched Spurs’ recent progress and clearly believes she can add another layer.
“I saw that Spurs had a very good season last year. My qualities can bring something to the team, even though I know they already have a lot.”
A defender built for the WSL
Sombath’s profile fits neatly into what the Women’s Super League now demands. She can operate at centre-back or right-back, aggressive without the ball and assured with it, just as comfortable stepping into midfield as she is defending her box.
Tottenham manager Martin Ho made it clear this was no opportunistic deal.
“She’s a player we’ve followed closely for some time and one who fits the profile of what we’re building here,” he said. “She has already shown real maturity in her performances, and we believe she has all the qualities to continue developing into a top player within our environment.
“Alice is an aggressive defender who is comfortable in possession, competitive in her duels, and has the ambition to keep improving every day. This is another important addition as we continue building for the future. We can't wait to get started with Alice and welcome her into the group.”

Sombath’s journey has run through some of the most demanding academies in Europe. She came through the ranks at Paris FC before moving into the youth set-up at Paris St-Germain, then made the jump to Lyon in 2020. Now she swaps a club that expects to win the Champions League every year for one that is still carving out its identity among England’s elite. It’s a different kind of challenge: less about maintaining dominance, more about helping to build it.
