Spurs protect unbeaten tour record
Tottenham arrived in mid-July and have treated the trip as more than a marketing exercise. A 2–0 win over Auckland FC set the tone, followed by a 1–1 draw and subsequent 4–2 penalty shootout victory over Sydney FC. No defeats, minutes in the legs, and a clearer sense of De Zerbi’s early blueprint.
Chelsea provide a far sterner test. They come into the game having edged a wild 6–4 contest against Western Sydney in their own opening outing in Australia, and will relish the chance to draw first blood in what is being billed as the first London derby ever staged outside England.
Both clubs want more than a fitness run-out. They want a marker laid down.
De Zerbi balances ambition with caution
Team selection tells its own story. De Zerbi still has to juggle ambition with the realities of pre-season fitness and niggling injuries.
James Maddison misses out after the head coach revealed the playmaker had sat out training with a minor issue. It is the sort of knock that, in August, might be managed through. In July, thousands of miles from north London, it is simply not worth the risk.
Mateus Fernandes also remains sidelined from the starting line-up. The Portuguese midfielder, absent from the last game against Sydney FC and again not seen in training, is still being carefully managed as De Zerbi controls workloads across the squad.
There is brighter news. A couple of senior figures are back in the frame, with Jan Paul van Hecke restored to the heart of the defence from the first whistle and Kevin Danso named among the substitutes. Experience, at both ends of the pitch, has been drip-fed back into the group as the tour has progressed.

Three more friendlies await. Getafe provide the next examination, before a double-header against Hoffenheim rounds off preparations. The season is now only three weeks away.
Tonight offers one last chance, in front of a distant but noisy crowd, to sharpen combinations, test character and steal a march on a direct rival. For De Zerbi and his players, how they finish in Sydney may say plenty about how ready they are when the real thing starts.
