Tommy Coyle Set for Charity Comeback Fight Against Derry Mathews
Former Commonwealth lightweight champion Tommy Coyle plans to step back into the boxing ring after more than five years of retirement. The 37-year-old from Hull will face old rival Derry Mathews in a bout aimed at raising funds for boxing clubs in Hull and Liverpool.
Details of the Upcoming Fight
The event is scheduled for December 11, although the exact venue in Hull is still to be announced. Fans have already shown strong enthusiasm for the matchup.
"The response has been incredible. It’s been humbling and I’m excited, but a little bit nervous too," said Coyle.
A Rivalry Renewed
Coyle and Mathews first met in 2013 at Craven Park, Hull, battling for the Commonwealth title. Mathews won by knockout in the 10th round. Reflecting on that fight, Coyle commented:
"Who knows what’s going to happen? In round 10, I got knocked out, so let’s just see if I can turn back the clock. We’re two old pros who are friends, and we’re going to go at it and try to create some memories."
Personal Motivations Behind the Return
This comeback also carries personal significance for Coyle, who lost his father Chris in 2022. His father had been a major influence throughout his career.
"It will be the first fight my dad’s not seen. It’s sad, but I can’t stop doing things just because he’s not around anymore. He isn’t coming back, and I’ve had to learn to come to terms with that. I’ve really struggled with him not being here; he was my best friend. For the next 12 weeks, it will give me something to focus on, something to chase, and something to occupy my mind. If I say I’m doing something, I always do it."
Giving Back to the Boxing Community
Coyle emphasized that fans and local boxing clubs will benefit from this fight as much as the fighters themselves.
"Boxing fans will be the winners in this fight as well as the clubs we’re raising money for."
