Tiger Shroff Withdraws from Mumbai FC's Durand Cup 2026

Tiger Shroff’s long‑trailed competitive bow in Indian football will have to wait.

The Bollywood star confirmed on Sunday that he will not turn out for Mumbai FC in the ongoing Durand Cup 2026, ending a week of growing buzz around his potential debut for the club.

The actor had been named in Mumbai FC’s squad on July 28, a move that immediately ignited talk that he could step onto the pitch in Shillong during the group stage. Co-owner Zoheb Amrani had even suggested Shroff might feature in at least one of the matches there.

That door has now closed, at least for this tournament.

A late work commitment has pulled him away from the campaign, with Shroff announcing his unavailability in a video on Mumbai FC’s official Instagram account.

“Really, really unfortunate, but a work commitment has come up at the last moment, so I won’t be able to make it to Shillong for the Durand Cup,” he said, confirming he will miss the clash against Nongkseh SS & CC.

For Mumbai FC, it is a blow not just in terms of star power but also for a player who has genuinely been part of the footballing project. Shroff has been associated with the club since its launch in 2024, regularly turning out for them in the Mumbai District League and taking part in training sessions rather than limiting himself to ceremonial appearances.

At 36, he had nurtured a serious ambition: to make a professional debut for the club he has helped promote from the sidelines and the training pitch alike. The Durand Cup, with its history and visibility, looked the perfect stage.

Instead, his role reverts to that of high-profile supporter.

Shroff stressed in the video that his absence does not mean a loss of commitment to the team or to the wider cause of Indian football. He spoke of backing the squad from afar and underlined his belief in the country’s emerging players.

“I’m going to do everything in my power to support you guys to the best of my capability. There’s so much young talent, and with the right support and opportunities, I truly believe Indian football can do wonders,” he said.

For now, Mumbai FC will travel to Shillong without their most recognisable face, and Shroff’s competitive debut remains on hold. The question is no longer whether he can handle the step up, but when his schedule will finally allow him to take it.
