Thomas Partey Joins Al-Shabab: A New Chapter in Saudi Arabia
Thomas Partey has touched down in Riyadh, stepping to the brink of a move that could reshape both his club career and Ghana’s midfield ahead of a crucial international cycle.
The Black Stars deputy captain has arrived in Saudi Arabia to undergo his medical with Al-Shabab. If he passes the routine checks, he is expected to sign a one-year contract with the Saudi Pro League side.
Free agent after Villarreal spell
Partey, now 33, is available on a free after his one-year deal with Villarreal ran out this summer. He featured 25 times in all competitions for the Spanish club in the 2025/26 campaign, a season that helped him re-establish rhythm after leaving Arsenal.
Before his stint in Spain, Partey spent several seasons in North London, becoming a central figure in Mikel Arteta’s rebuild. He made 130 appearances for Arsenal and scored nine goals before departing the Premier League as a free agent in 2025.
The move to Al-Shabab offers him another crack at top-level football in a league that continues to lure high-profile names. It also drops him straight into a familiar dressing room.
Reunion with Carrasco
If the deal is completed, Partey will reunite with Yannick Carrasco, his former teammate at Atletico Madrid. The Belgian winger has been at Al-Shabab for the past three seasons and remains one of the club’s key attacking outlets.
That existing connection should help Partey settle quickly in Riyadh, where Al-Shabab are pushing to stay competitive in an increasingly star-studded Saudi Pro League.
Boost for Black Stars
This transfer is not just another line on Partey’s CV. It carries weight for Ghana.
The midfielder remains one of the pillars of the Black Stars setup and was a central figure at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played three matches as Ghana reached the Round of 32.
Ghana missed the last Africa Cup of Nations and cannot afford another absence. With qualifying for the 2027 AFCON set to begin in September, they need their leaders fit, sharp, and playing regular club football.
Partey’s expected move to Al-Shabab could deliver exactly that: consistent minutes, a defined role, and a competitive environment to keep him at full throttle for national duty.
Preparing for the next chapter
This step to Riyadh follows an intense personal build-up. Partey has been working on his fitness in Turkey in recent weeks, putting in extra sessions while weighing up his options as a free agent.
Those workouts now look like the prelude to a fresh challenge in Saudi Arabia.
If the medical goes to plan and the contract is signed, Partey will walk into a new league, an old partnership with Carrasco, and a familiar responsibility: carrying the expectations of a country that needs him firing when AFCON qualifying kicks off.
