Bayern Munich Supports Jamal Musiala After Collapses
Bayern Munich have moved to calm concern around Jamal Musiala after the midfielder twice collapsed during recent friendlies, with head coach Vincent Kompany revealing a change in medication lay behind the incidents.
Musiala, 23, disclosed earlier this week that he is receiving treatment for what he called a "neurological dysfunction", which leads to "temporary, brief, but easily treatable" seizures. Bayern later confirmed they had detected signs of the condition before the World Cup and were fully aware of it before last season, though it had not previously affected him on the pitch.
The alarm bells rang when Musiala went down twice in four days, against RB Leipzig and Heidenheim. Kompany, speaking before Saturday's German Supercup showdown with Borussia Dortmund, drew a direct line between those episodes and an adjustment to the player’s treatment.
"I spoke with Jamal, he said, 'no problem, you can say it'," Kompany explained. "He made a slight change to his treatment, which caused some side effects. It's perfectly normal to make changes to a treatment plan."
The coach stressed that the real shock for the club came long ago, when the diagnosis first emerged, not in the past week.
"The initial shock for us was a long time ago. Therefore, we're not talking about it that much at the moment," he said. "We've received much more information since then and made decisions with the help of leading experts. Jamal has everyone's support."
Inside Säbener Straße, this is no longer a hidden issue. Bayern sporting director Max Eberl underlined that the squad and staff had been living with the knowledge for months and that Musiala himself wanted to bring the story into the open.
"We've known about it the entire last season. The players also knew about it. For us, it's become part of everyday life," Eberl said. "We will give him all our support, have already done so, and will continue to do so. We're doing this together."
For now, Bayern must start the new campaign without one of their most gifted players. Kompany has ruled Musiala out of the Supercup, along with Lennard Maloney and Serge Gnabry, and is intent on restoring a sense of normality around his young star.
He spoke of wanting to "get things back to how they were before" and confirmed that Musiala will train "individually" for the rest of the week.
The plan is clear: careful build-up, no unnecessary risks. Bayern open their Bundesliga title defence against Stuttgart next, and all eyes will be on whether Musiala is ready to step back into the spotlight.
