Teams Eliminated from FIFA World Cup 2026: Updated List
Some countries in North America have seen their hopes dashed earlier than expected in the 2026 World Cup. The tournament's expansion to 48 teams from 32 means more nations have a chance to advance beyond the group stage, with an added knockout round increasing opportunities. Still, elimination is inevitable for many, and several teams have already been knocked out.
Current Eliminations
Because the format allows eight of the best third-place teams to move forward, many teams will remain in contention until the final group matches conclude. That said, as of June 23, four teams have officially exited the tournament.
Haiti, Turkey, Tunisia, and Panama were among the first teams to be sent home. Their early exits reflect new tie-break rules that prioritize head-to-head results when teams are tied on points within their groups.
For example, Haiti's losses to Scotland and Brazil mean they cannot surpass those teams, even if they earn points later. If they tie with Scotland on points, Scotland would finish higher because of their direct win.
Group Stage Tie-Break Rules
FIFA clarified how ties in group standings are settled for this edition. When teams share points, the following order is used:
- Head-to-head result between the tied teams
- Goal difference in those head-to-head matches
- Goals scored in those matches
- If still tied, goal difference in all group matches
- Goals scored across all group games
- Team conduct score based on cards received
- FIFA rankings if no other criteria separate the teams
Advancement of Third-Place Teams
This tournament sees eight third-place teams advancing to the Round of 32, adding complexity to group dynamics. These third-place teams are ranked by points, goal difference, goals scored, conduct score, and FIFA ranking.
World Cup Expansion Details
The World Cup has grown from 32 to 48 teams starting in 2026, resulting in more groups and an additional knockout round. Winners of the tournament will now play eight matches in total, one more than in previous formats.
