Tariq Lamptey Joins QPR: A Fresh Start in the Championship

Tariq Lamptey’s career needed a fresh doorway. Queens Park Rangers have just kicked it open.

The Championship club have signed the 25-year-old right-back on a free transfer after his departure from Fiorentina, betting that the electric defender who once lit up the Premier League can rediscover that spark in West London.

Lamptey arrived in Serie A from Brighton in September 2025, a move that was supposed to relaunch him on a bigger stage. Instead, a serious knee injury stopped everything almost as soon as it started. He managed only two appearances for Fiorentina before the rehab grind began.

Now, after months of work away from the spotlight, he insists the worst is behind him.

“My recovery (from injury) has gone well and I'm not too far away now. I'm looking forward to joining with the boys,” he told the club website. “Throughout my football journey I've always been resilient.”

That resilience has been a theme from the start. Lamptey came through at Chelsea, making his Premier League debut in a high-pressure fixture against Arsenal. He then chose to leave the comfort of Cobham for regular football at Brighton, where he became one of the league’s most exciting attacking full-backs and racked up more than 120 appearances for the Seagulls.

His rise drew attention beyond club level. Born in England and capped at under-21 level, Lamptey switched allegiance to Ghana and went to the 2022 World Cup, collecting 11 senior caps for the Black Stars so far. That decision underlined a player unafraid to make bold calls about his career.

QPR believe they are the latest to benefit from that mindset.

“We've had good conversations about what he wants to achieve and how he feels that this is the right environment for him to flourish in,” said chief executive Christian Nourry. “His decision to join QPR over a myriad of other EFL Championship clubs and clubs abroad is a further signal of the growing potential of this football club.”

It is a pointed statement. Lamptey had options, at home and overseas, yet chose Loftus Road and the scrap of a 46-game Championship season. QPR have kept the details of his contract under wraps, but the message is clear: this is a club trying to move upwards, and a player determined to prove he still belongs at the sharp end of the game.

For Lamptey, the equation is simple. Stay fit. Stay explosive. Become a force down the right again.

For QPR, the timing is sharp. They open their new Championship campaign away at Portsmouth on Saturday, 15 August (15:00 BST). If Lamptey’s recovery continues on the track he describes, it may not be long before those surging runs and fearless one‑v‑one duels are back, this time in blue and white hoops.

If his body holds, this could be one of the most intriguing gambles of the Championship season.
