Summer Transfer Window: Newcastle's Ambitions and Chelsea's Fine
The summer window has not so much opened as exploded, with Premier League and European clubs locked into a frantic, overlapping web of deals, stand-offs and quiet power plays.
Newcastle: one eye on Saudi, one on the future
At Newcastle, the story is pulling in two directions at once.
Joelinton, according to reports, informed the club shortly after last season that he wanted a move to Saudi Arabia. The Brazilian remains at St James’ Park, though, with no formal offer on the table. Interest is clear. Concrete bids are not. For a club wrestling with financial rules and the need to refresh the squad, his situation hangs awkwardly in the air.
Behind the scenes, Newcastle are working aggressively on the next phase. They are close to landing Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek, with talks now centred on payment structure rather than principle. The 24-year-old, capped in a World Cup squad for the Czech Republic and already with 88 senior appearances for Braga, has a £25.65m release clause. Newcastle see him as the long-term successor to Nick Pope after missing out on James Trafford.
Out wide, they have been tracking Real Betis winger Abde Ezzalzouli for weeks, sending scouts towards the end of last season. Betis president Angel Haro has already admitted Abde is “not untouchable”, and Newcastle are understood to be willing to trigger his £51.3m release clause. The hitch is the player himself. The Morocco international only wants Champions League football, leaving Newcastle with persuasion work to do if they are to convince the 24-year-old to head to Tyneside.
The biggest change, though, will be on the touchline. Newcastle have reached a full agreement to appoint Matthias Jaissle as their new head coach, with compensation of around £8m to prise him from Al Ahli. The 38-year-old German is expected to join up with the squad at their La Manga training camp, stepping into Eddie Howe’s shoes ahead of the new Premier League season. A new coach, a new goalkeeper in the works, a marquee winger targeted, and a key midfielder eyeing Saudi: Newcastle are reshaping themselves at speed.
Chelsea fined, but spared a ban – and still joking
Chelsea’s past and present collided this week.
The club have been hit with a £10m fine and handed a suspended two-window transfer ban after admitting breaches of FA rules over payments to agents and third parties between 2009 and 2022. A suspended six-point deduction was overturned on appeal, so there is no immediate sporting penalty. The breaches were self-reported by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital after their 2022 takeover, and the FA will channel the fine into grassroots football.
On the pitch, the mood is lighter. Cole Palmer has already fired a playful warning at new signing Morgan Rogers over their shared “ice cold” celebration. The pair, reunited at Stamford Bridge after Rogers’ £117m move, both use the shivering gesture. Palmer has trademarked it in the UK, even if Rogers was the first of the two to pull it out in a professional game. Palmer joked that if his team-mate tries anything, “he’ll have the bailiffs at his door” before quickly softening it with the idea they might just do it together.
Even in a summer of audits and sanctions, Chelsea still find space for a little theatre.
Leverkusen move for Gutierrez, Bournemouth strike for Silva
Across Europe, Bayer Leverkusen are tightening their grip on another piece of their title-defending puzzle. The German champions are closing in on Miguel Gutierrez, with reports in Italy suggesting a deal with Napoli is in its final stages at a fee between £22m and £26m. Leverkusen are said to have improved their initial offer as Napoli opted to cash in on the Spanish left-back after just one season to fund further business.
On England’s south coast, Bournemouth have pounced. Antonio Silva has agreed a cut-price £25.7m move just hours after captaining boyhood club Benfica in a Europa League qualifier. The 22-year-old Portugal international is travelling for a medical this weekend, a significant coup for a club that continues to punch above its traditional transfer weight.
Spurs promise a “bomba” as spending spree continues
At Tottenham, the spending shows no sign of slowing.
Roberto De Zerbi has already overseen more than £230m of investment this summer, transforming a squad he steered away from relegation into one with far grander ambitions. Yet the Italian insists they are only just over halfway through their recruitment drive and has promised fans another transfer “bomba”.
Talks are ongoing over Manchester City’s £60m-rated Savinho, though De Zerbi’s tease suggests an even bigger statement could be coming. The priority is clear: a fierce new forward line, with a striker and possibly another winger still on the wish list. For a club accused in recent years of hesitating in the market, this is a very different Tottenham.
Inter land Stones, and look at Liverpool’s Curtis Jones
Inter Milan have already made one of the window’s most eye-catching free transfers. John Stones has signed a two-year deal with the Italian champions after leaving Manchester City when his contract expired at the end of June. His decade at the Etihad yielded a haul of trophies, and interest from Chelsea and Juventus, but it is Inter who have secured the England defender.
They are not stopping there. Inter have returned for Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, signalling a willingness to pay up to £30m after two earlier approaches were rejected. Liverpool, though, value the 23-year-old closer to £43m. The gap is sizeable, and the negotiation could drag, but the intent from Serie A is unmistakable.
Coventry smash their record, Brentford add energy
In the Championship, Coventry City are about to make a statement of their own. Carl Rushworth is set to become the club’s record signing after they agreed an initial £22.5m fee with Brighton. The deal includes add-ons, a sell-on clause and a buy-back option for Brighton, underlining how highly they rate the goalkeeper.
Rushworth was one of the Championship’s standout performers last season, playing every league game and keeping 17 clean sheets as Frank Lampard’s side earned promotion. Now Coventry are betting heavily that he can anchor them at a higher level.
Brentford, meanwhile, are closing in on Mamadou Sangare. The Lens midfielder has left the club’s pre-season tour in Italy to complete a move, with the Bees moving quickly to inject more energy and depth into the heart of Thomas Frank’s team.
City chase Bouaddi, London rivals scout Camberos
Manchester City are planning for the future as well as the present. They have reached an agreement with Ayyoub Bouaddi and are in advanced talks with Lille over the Morocco wonderkid. Lille want around £86m, a huge figure that could be reduced if City agree to loan the 18-year-old back for the season.
Bouaddi, one of the breakout stars of the World Cup, has drawn interest from Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Bayern Munich. City are trying to move first and decisively, as they often do when a generational talent comes into view.
North London’s two heavyweights, Arsenal and Spurs, are also looking further afield. Both have sent scouts to watch Guadalajara winger Hugo Camberos. The 19-year-old’s father has said his son dreams of playing in Europe, and Barcelona are also monitoring the Mexico youth international. A bidding contest feels almost inevitable if his trajectory continues.
West Ham reset for the Championship
Relegated West Ham are preparing for life in the Championship with a clear plan.
They retain a long-standing interest in Arsenal winger Reiss Nelson as they search for a left-sided attacker with proven Premier League experience. The logic is simple: minimise adaptation time, maximise the chance of an immediate return.
They are also in talks with Celtic over midfielder Arne Engels. The 22-year-old Belgium international attracted multiple bids from Nottingham Forest in January, all rejected. Now West Ham are leading the race, with two years left on his Celtic contract and several Premier League clubs hovering.
Hull, Leeds, Forest, Everton circle their targets
Hull City have held positive talks over Augsburg midfielder Mert Komur. The 21-year-old Germany Under-21 international has several suitors, but Hull, newly promoted to the Premier League, are pushing hardest with discussions focused on the player’s camp. Augsburg have been informed, though there are no club-to-club negotiations yet.
Higher up the food chain, Leeds, Nottingham Forest and Everton are all eyeing Chelsea striker Liam Delap. Chelsea are open to a sale, valuing the England Under-21 forward at between £35m and £40m. For clubs searching for goals and resale value, Delap offers both – at a price.
Ajax turn to ter Stegen
In the Netherlands, Ajax are closing in on a headline loan deal for Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Reports in Spain say the goalkeeper is set to leave Barcelona’s pre-season camp to travel to Amsterdam and complete the move. According to RAC1, Barcelona have agreed to cover 90 per cent of his wages during the loan to push the deal through. For Ajax, it would be a marquee arrival in a position they have been desperate to stabilise.
Deals are edging closer, some are stalling on personal ambition, others on valuation. From Newcastle’s managerial reset to Spurs’ promised “bomba” and Coventry’s record gamble in goal, the market is moving with real force.
The only question now is which club blinks first as the biggest names still in play weigh up their next move.
