Southampton Signs Divin Mubama on Loan as Shea Charles Leaves for Fulham
Southampton answered the loss of one rising talent by gambling on another, sealing a season-long loan for Manchester City striker Divin Mubama on the same day Shea Charles left for Fulham in a £30m deal.
One out, one in. Very different profiles, but the message from St Mary’s is clear: the rebuild will not pause.
A striker with a point to prove
Mubama is 21, hungry, and already on his second major move of the summer. A product of the West Ham academy, he left east London for Manchester City in 2024 after 18 senior appearances for the Hammers, eight of them off the bench in the Premier League.
He has seen big nights up close. He was on the bench when West Ham lifted the Europa Conference League in June 2023, part of the squad but not yet the story.
Now he wants to be the headline.
His first taste of regular Championship football came last season at Stoke City. Five goals in 28 appearances hinted at potential, then his momentum was cut short. A ligament injury in a 0-0 draw with Queens Park Rangers in January – from a challenge Stoke boss Mark Robins called “terrible” – effectively ended his campaign. He featured just once more for the Potters.
That setback could have stalled him. Instead, it seems to have sharpened his edge.
Fresh from City’s tour and ready to fire
Manchester City’s pre-season tour of Asia has given Southampton a different version of Mubama to the one that limped out of Stoke’s season. He scored against Inter Milan and the K-League All Stars, then added an assist in City’s 3-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Seoul on Sunday.
These are not competitive goals, but they matter. They show rhythm, timing, confidence – and, crucially for Southampton, fitness.
“With the way this team plays, when you've got players around you that have that much quality, you will be served,” Mubama told the club’s website. “It's up to you whether you put the ball in the back of the net, and that's what I'm here to do.
“I've just come back from a pre-season where I've scored goals. I've been playing, I feel really fresh, I feel sharp, so I'm just really excited to get going.”
That is exactly what Southampton are buying: a striker who feels ready now, not one talking about long-term development.
Saints’ response to a £30m departure
The timing of the deal is no coincidence. Losing Northern Ireland midfielder Shea Charles to Fulham for £30m underlines how Southampton’s best young players are being watched – and taken – by the Premier League.
They cannot replace Charles like-for-like with a loan. So they have chosen to strengthen in a different area, looking for goals to power another promotion push.
Sporting director Johannes Spors made no attempt to dress it up as a cautious move.
“As soon as we knew about Divin's availability we acted quickly to bring him here, not just because of his incredible goal scoring ability, but because of his work ethic and hunger to help the team, which will be vitally important this season,” he said.
Work ethic. Hunger. Those are not throwaway words in the Championship, where 46 games expose any passenger.
A decisive season for Mubama
This loan will define how Mubama is viewed in England. Talented academy graduate? Or fully fledged senior striker who can carry a promotion contender’s attack?
He has felt the cut-throat side of the game already – limited chances at West Ham, an injury at Stoke, fierce competition at Manchester City. Now he walks into a club that expects to challenge at the top end of the table, one that has just banked serious money for a key midfielder and needs new heroes.
Southampton have given him a stage. The rest is exactly what he says it is: put the ball in the net.
