Southampton Reject Aston Villa's £18m Bid for Harwood-Bellis
Aston Villa have seen an opening move knocked back in their search for Ezri Konsa’s successor.
The Europa League winners tabled an offer worth around £18m plus add-ons for Southampton centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis, but the Championship club rejected the proposal. Saints are understood to be holding out for closer to £25m.
The timing is no coincidence. Villa are braced for England defender Konsa to join Arsenal in a deal expected to top £50m, and the recruitment team at Bodymoor Heath has already swung into action. Harwood-Bellis, 22, sits high on that list.
Villa’s reshuffle after European glory
Since lifting the Europa League in May, Villa have started to break up the side that got them there. Youri Tielemans has gone to Manchester United. Morgan Rogers has moved to Chelsea. Lucas Digne has joined Paris St-Germain.
On top of that, two pillars of Unai Emery’s team – goalkeeper Emi Martinez and Premier League-era record scorer Ollie Watkins – have both been linked with possible departures. Villa are not just tweaking around the edges; they are walking a tightrope between cashing in and staying competitive.
The response has been brisk. This week alone, Villa have brought in goalkeeper Zion Suzuki and left-back Matteo Ruggeri. Earlier in the summer, midfielder Joao Gomes arrived from Wolves and forward Johan Manzambi from Freiburg, signalling a squad being rebuilt on the fly.
Now the focus is the heart of defence.
Harwood-Bellis: from City prospect to England international
Harwood-Bellis joined Southampton in 2023, initially on loan from Manchester City before making the move permanent. He has since grown into a central figure at St Mary’s and earned his first England cap in 2024, featuring in a Nations League match against the Republic of Ireland.
His path has not been the typical academy fairy tale. He came through City’s youth system but never made a first-team appearance, instead building his reputation away from the Etihad and turning himself into one of the Championship’s most highly regarded defenders.
Southampton’s stance reflects that rise. They finished fourth in the Championship last season, only for the Spygate scandal to derail their play-off campaign, and they are under no pressure to sell cheaply. If Villa want Harwood-Bellis to anchor their post-Konsa back line, they will almost certainly have to go higher.
The first bid has been rebuffed. The question now is simple: do Villa push again and pay the premium for a future England regular, or turn elsewhere as the clock ticks on their defensive rebuild?
