Shubman Gill's Captaincy Record Across All Formats: Tests, ODIs, T20Is, and IPL

Shubman Gill has quickly become a prominent leader in Indian cricket. Since taking on the Test captaincy in 2025, he has steered India through several important series victories, including leveling the tour in England and wins against West Indies, Afghanistan, and Sri Lanka.

His leadership was evident during India's 165-run win in the first Test of the two-match Sri Lanka series in Galle, marking his sixth win in 10 Test matches as captain. Though the second Test ended in a draw after Sri Lanka batted resiliently on Day 5, his overall Test captaincy win rate dipped slightly following that match.

At just 26 years old, Gill has captained India in Tests, One-Day Internationals (ODIs), Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), and also leads the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Under his guidance since IPL 2024, the Titans have reached the playoffs consecutively in 2025 and 2026.

T20I Captaincy Record

Gill made his debut as India's T20I captain during the 2024 series against Zimbabwe. In this role, he led the team in 5 matches, achieving 4 wins and suffering only one loss.

Gill's ODI captaincy began in October 2025 with a series against Australia, which India lost 2-1. After a brief absence during South Africa tour when KL Rahul took over, Gill returned for the home series against New Zealand but faced another 2-1 defeat. His first series victory came in June 2026 against Afghanistan with a clean 3-0 sweep. He continued as captain into the England series in July 2026, where India won the opening match but lost the series 2-1.

Test Captaincy Record

Appointed before the 2025 England tour following the retirements of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from Tests, Gill faced a tough start with a 2-2 drawn five-Test series against England. Subsequently, he led India to their first Test series win under his captaincy against West Indies at home and followed it up with an overseas series victory against Afghanistan in June 2026.

The Galle Test versus Sri Lanka further boosted his record; India posted 462 runs, bowled Sri Lanka out for 284, set a target of 372, and eventually won by 165 runs. This marked Gill’s sixth win in 10 Tests, improving his winning ratio to 60%. The ongoing series currently stands at 1-0 in India's favor, although the drawn second Test in Colombo caused a slight dip in his win percentage.
