Shay Given Says Chelsea Would Seize Chance to Sign Jordan Pickford if Interested

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given believes Chelsea would eagerly sign Jordan Pickford, Everton's and England's first-choice goalkeeper, if the player showed any willingness to leave. Pickford, 32, has been a consistent figure for Everton since his £25 million move from Sunderland in 2017.

Given Surprised by Lack of Transfer Rumours

Despite Pickford's long-standing presence and solid performances, transfer talk around him has been minimal. Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Given remarked on the unusual quietness surrounding Pickford’s future. He said that Pickford has been at Everton nearly a decade and has been England's number one for much of that time, even holding the record for England World Cup appearances.

"It's strange we haven't heard other clubs making moves for him. Maybe he's just settled well at Everton. There's usually some goalkeeper movement each summer, like managers moving on," Given said.

He added that although goalkeepers often improve with age, and Pickford is only 32, the former Manchester City player thinks Chelsea would be quick to act if Pickford gave them any hint of interest.

Pickford’s Consistent Excellence Praised

Given highlighted some of Pickford’s remarkable saves, including one against Sandro Tonali last season at St James Park, calling it "unbelievable." He described Pickford as a "Steady Eddie," not to downplay him but to emphasize his reliability. Given explained that such steadiness is a real asset, combined with Pickford’s passionate personality and hunger to win, which cannot be taught.

"He's got a real personality. Some say it can sometimes spill over, but it shows his passion and desire for the team to succeed. It’s his will to win, you can't coach that," Given noted.

Pickford Committed to Everton

Pickford himself has shown strong loyalty to Everton. After a match against Brentford last April, he expressed his happiness at Goodison Park, praising the club and its supporters.

"Everton’s been great to me, and I’ve been good to them. We have a great relationship. I love the fans; the fanbase is quality. I’ve got the best chant that Everton fans sing, which is quite an achievement," Pickford said.

Looking Ahead to the New Season

Everton will start their 2026–27 Premier League season hosting Crystal Palace on August 22. Pickford’s leadership and sharp reflexes will again be key to the Toffees’ defensive strength as they face a demanding campaign. The presence of England’s main goalkeeper remains crucial for Everton’s stability at the back.
