Savinho Pushes for Tottenham Move Amid City Fee Standoff
Savinho has told Manchester City he wants out. Not next year, not in good time. Now – and specifically to join Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 22-year-old Brazil international has already agreed personal terms with Spurs, according to Fabrizio Romano, and is pressing for the move to be completed as soon as possible. The problem sits where it so often does in modern football: between two club balance sheets.
City and Tottenham remain, in Romano’s words, “pretty far apart” on a transfer fee for the winger, leaving a deal that looks simple on paper stuck in a stand-off.
From Girona sensation to Etihad bottleneck
Savinho arrived at City in 2024 off the back of a breakout loan spell at Girona in La Liga, where he emerged as one of the most exciting young wide forwards in Europe. That season turned him from promising prospect into headline name within the City Football Group.
The step up to Pep Guardiola’s first team, though, has been a different story. In two seasons at the Etihad, Savinho produced flashes of real quality but never fully broke through the logjam of elite attackers in front of him. Last season he made just 24 appearances in all competitions, struggling to secure a consistent starting role in a squad overflowing with options in the wide areas.
Guardiola’s structure, so demanding and so precise, did not always bend to Savinho’s strengths as a direct, instinctive winger. The talent was obvious; the runway to show it regularly was not.
Maresca’s arrival closes one door, opens another
Any hope of a clearer path this summer dimmed when Enzo Maresca walked through the door. The new City manager inherits an already crowded group of wide forwards, and his own ideas for the role only sharpen the competition.
For Savinho, that has crystallised a decision. Rather than fight for minutes in another tactical reshuffle, he wants a fresh start – and Tottenham, with De Zerbi at the helm, have become the escape route he has been waiting for.
Earlier this summer, the winger submitted a formal transfer request. That pushed the issue into the hands of director of football Hugo Viana, who has been in talks over a potential sale as City look to recoup funds and free up a squad place before the window shuts.
De Zerbi effect pulls hard
The attraction of Spurs is not vague. It has a name and a touchline address.
Savinho is understood to be drawn above all to De Zerbi’s attacking blueprint, which gives wide forwards license to attack space, isolate defenders and play on the front foot. For a winger who thrived in Girona’s expansive set-up and then found himself squeezed into City’s more choreographed patterns, the fit is obvious.
Romano reports that Savinho wants to join De Zerbi “as soon as possible”, and the fact personal terms are already agreed underlines the player’s determination to make the move happen. That level of commitment inevitably increases the pressure on City’s hierarchy to find an outcome, especially as the clock ticks on the window.
City hold the cards – for now
Yet City did not sign Savinho on a short-term punt. His contract runs until 2031, a length that hands the Premier League champions firm leverage in any negotiation. They are under no obligation to accept a cut-price fee simply because the player has made his preference clear.
The “pretty far apart” description of the current talks is telling. This is not a deal waiting for final signatures; it is a genuine gap in valuation that will demand a significant shift from one side, or a compromise from both, before anything moves.
From City’s perspective, there is more than just principle at stake. The club have already committed substantial resources this summer, including the signing of Elliot Anderson, and a Savinho sale would give Viana greater financial room to manoeuvre in the final weeks of the market. The funds could be crucial in addressing the remaining positions on his list.
So the equation is stark. A restless winger with a long contract. A manager he is desperate to play for. A buying club that has done its part with personal terms. And a selling club that knows exactly how much power a deal running to 2031 provides.
Something has to give. The only question is whether it will be City’s price, Tottenham’s resolve, or Savinho’s patience.
